I have yet to achieve 500 with my Metro due to nerves...
The factory gauge reports an early "E" and I always chicken out. I recently installed a different cluster that has a tach and it seems that it's fuel gauge falls to "E" even faster.

I do have a vehicle that achieves 500 miles every single tank though...too bad it takes 37 gallons to refill the '90 Suburban after pushing it that far. Refueling the 'Burb was what inspired me to buy another Geo Metro. The last time I filled it, the receipt was for $142.00...believe me, that was the LAST time.......I bought the Metro days later.

It's a long standing tradition with TDI's to see how far you can go on a single tank of fuel.

My personal record is 1252 miles according to the factory odometer on factory sized
tires.

Filled ALL THE WAY OVER the top; ran 200+ miles after the low fuel light came on there were more bubbles in the clear fuel line than fuel when I did refuel.

Lots of EOC, never exceeded 50 mph most of cruise time was at 40 mph, no A/C use at all, same 40 mile each way trip for quite a while helped quite a bit also.

if you want to, just to see how far you can go, carry a gallon of gas in a can with you when you get close, just in case...

I have done over 500 miles twice with the Elantra. The last tank was the first one over 42 MPG and the first time I hit 500 miles before the low fuel light.

Surprisingly, I never went for huge tank mileage in the TDI. I've done over 650 miles a couple of times, but I always refill before the low fuel light and do regular fills, not filling to the rim.

i could do if my engine wasn't so picky
it doesn't like to start when the gauge reads E but i fill up 1 gal later and it tells me i only used 8 gal which means 2 r still left in my tank so my gauge reads E when 70%(10gal tank) of my gas is used wtf?!
it annoys me

I have the same issue when my Civic's tank gets low. Still...

729 miles is my best, and 3 times over 700.

I made the 500 mile club on the all wheel drive A4 wagon this summer, almost 502 miles. I did it on 2008-06-14 ~ 501.9 mi. ~ 14.52 US gal
My FE is not as great as I know it could be but I'm getting 30% better then EPA and I'm crushing lots of 2 wheel drive lighter cars.

So then imagine my enlightenment when I saw a commercial for the all new Civic Hybrid getting 44mpg and then me thinking, wow my 2004 Vibe does +1mpg better, its not a hybrid and is paid off ... LOL

I know right what kind of car would I have to buy to get an average of 33 (according to the man). I did a quick google search for the answer: a 2WD car like the new Saturn Aura... .according to (Top 10 Fuel Misers - MSN Autos) I could get - Ford Escape Hybrid 2WD (tie) Mercury Mariner Hybrid 2WD (tie) Mazda Tribute Hybrid 2WD but again all of these are 2WD not an option for my winter life style in the north east.

Anyone on Ecomodder in a Subaru - I never noticed how BAD their FE is!

I can drive 75-80 mph in my Volvo 960 and get 525 miles out of a tank of gas.
The trick is to drive at 65 or less to get over 600 miles per tank.
Oh by the way it does have a 21.3 gallon fuel tank.
When the little light goes on I can easily drive another 50 miles.
I have yet to see at the fill up less than 1.0 gallon still in the tank.
