Eugene Oregon to Mill Valley, CA. 529 miles in one tank. We've done it more than once in our Volvo 850 wagon 5 speed. We usually average around 30-33mpg depending on how much AC we use. I stick to the speed limit.
Average MPG.

Miles to empty at average MPG.

600 miles to the tank is conceivable but I don't think I want to let the fuel get that low. I love my old 960. I passed it on to my parents. But the 850 is definitely a step above in both fuel economy and functionality. The aerodynamic undertray also helps.

With good gas she will average 29.5 mpg. Last trip I got two tanks of weasel piss gas at a Pilot in SC. and it killed my mileage. It sucked at least 2-3 mpg per gallon out of my average tank. The good gas got me 29.72 and 29.25 average in those tanks. The 87 745T 5sp will get me around 29-29.5 at 65 mph and 30.75-31.0 at 55 mph.

Apples to apples put the Civic in the hands of an experienced eco-driver and it will have some pretty impressive numbers.

How can we confirm that? I have always wondered how I would do in a prius or a civic hybrid ... I guess one day I'll have to rent one for a week, but thats a pretty expensive experiment.

I doubt I can go 70% above epa with a prius, but if I could, OH MAN !!!

My record in the Prius is 1143 miles on 12.4 gallons. Since the tank is only rated at 11.9, I'm not sure how far I could go. I've heard that you can stuff 13 or more gallons in a Prius. When the weather warms up again next year, I'm shooting for 1250 miles.

We have one here with a Prius for starts and lots of numbers over 70+ at cleanmpg. Emissions is another factor but your right bank for the buck I don't think they can compete.

You may have tank issues

it annoys me

I have seen this scenario several times in the past.
Usually it means that the fuel pump has become too weak over it's life to pull fuel from the bottom of the tank, push the fuel up & out of the tank and pressurize the system to minimum requirement.
All At Once.
A few times I found the pump check valve was bad, once the plumbing in the tank had rusted so badly the pump was spraying fuel all over the inside of the tank.
But that still means replacing the pump.
Simple Diagnosis;
Try cycling the key two times before starting the car.
Turn car on, hear fuel pump run, turn car off.
Repeat, then start car.
If it starts easier, (maybe still not as easy as with a full tank, but easier none the less) then you will need to replace the pump.
It is not a hard job.
On some cars there is an access panel in the trunk or under the rear seat that allows you to change the pump with a minimum of effort.
Other cars require you to remove the tank and replace the pump.
Mostly it depends on the year and model.
Older or less expensive cars = drop tank.
Newer or more expensive cars = panel access.
Hope this helps,
Schultz

Hi Gang,

Well I decided to go for a long drive over Xmas, Adelaide to Wilpena Pound and return, 910km/565mile round trip. I filled up in Adelaide on 95 Octane Ethanol added (first time I've ever filled the tank) 52Litres/13.7Gallons. As is my style I sat on 85kmh/51mph and took the most direct route, very nice road, VERY little traffic.

The trip took me just over 6 hours. When I got there the gauge showed over half a tank left I didn't quite believe it, but since I had a jerry can in the back I decided to do the return trip without refuelling. I also drove around a bit while I was there doing another 60km/37miles.

I drove back in the same Grandma style only stopping to change a tyre. I got to Clare reading 835km on the trip and the low fuel light beginning to glow angrily, so I started doing EOC to squeeze some more distance out, up till now I'd simply used a sympathetic foot easing off for minor hills etc.

I hit 880km/546miles before the engine started to miss going up a hill so I poured 2 or 3 litres in from the Jerry and got home very pleased with myself. If I'd bothered to do pulse & glide for the trip I'd say 600miles would be quite achievable.

Trip avg 5.9L/100 or 39.8mpg

LOVE Toyota's

Well I got 473 in my Volvo once but it took 17.1 gallons. The tank only holds 17.4!
