That's an excellent longevity goal.

If you'd been the one to buy the car new, you'd probably have a slightly different approach to the way you stated that, though. Something tells me that "hoping" wouldn't have been a part of the statement.

500k can be done indeed. I worked on 50 year old air planes realizing I was getting owned by the scale of what car markets put upon a dumb populus..

Today, I go as far as welding structures, realizing all replacement parts are better than oe, and even rebuilding engne components is better than ever.

Starting with a good base takes away alot of frustration of course. ie: the diesel at low rpms goes a long day breaking the body, but the gas engine keeps the body and breaks the engine.

alot of things to hang onto.

I even took a subaru until breaking in the middle, losing hopes of accurate measurements to fix.. it was 17 and 167k miles, no repairs. It stangely stayed looking good, the rust game is nasty. Just checked fluids once and awhile. Gave it away running perfect...a 3 main bearing extinction for free.

I'm assuming the Neon is your car since the other one you have listed says G/F's. 250K miles sure isn't beyond it's capability. I ran a '76 Chrysler Cordoba to 231K miles back several years ago then sold it to a friend who had just got married and needed some cheap transportation for him and his wife. I don't know how many more miles he put on it after getting it from me, but I know he drove it (beat it to death) for a good while (probably 1-2 years) before getting rid of it, so I'm pretty sure it broke the 250K mile barrier. It was using a quart of oil about every 300 miles when I sold it. I was pouring burnt motor oil in it just to keep the crankcase full and it hadn't had an oil change in over 30K miles when I let it go. The oil wasn't staying in it long enough to need changing. lol

My initial goal for the '88 Escort was 250K miles, but as you can see it's already more than doubled that.

That's pretty good for an old Pontiac. LOL How's the grill block working out?

I did an A-B-A test with it and nothing changed! So this morning it went to the landfill. The air going through the hole doesn't get forced anywhere, it can spill out before the rad and the air dam pushes it to the outside. At least thats what I'm thinking. I kept the clear tape over the signal light pockets though...I'm not responding to the pontiac jab! I get enough from the old lady, shes got two fords.

SMART WOMAN!!! I was only joking about the Pontiac. I've owned cars and trucks from all the US manufacturers (GM, Ford, Chrysler) and some foreign manufacturers, it just seems like I personally get better service from Ford products so I stick with them.

I should come clean, I bought the car with 170k and a blown engine. Put in a low mileage(75k) engine and it runs like a top. Not sure how it died but I'm glad I got it running again, most people don't do maintenance. It should have gone farther on its first engine but who knows how it was treated.
