I removed the EGR since I did not have an easy method of proper control with the megasquirt computer. It will idle at 14.7 but you can see the idle speed control solenoid increase duty cycle to keep the RPMs at the proper set point. The engine has more vibration while idling at 14.7. If I turn off the pulse width modulating idle air control and let the engine fall to ~700 RPM while at 13:1 and start to lean it out the engine will stall before reaching 14.7:1. It needs slightly more throttle opening to maintain a lean idle. Hopefully I can still have an efficient idle by having it idle around 750 RPM. I like how quiet and smooth the engine gets at 750 RPM. I wonder why the factory had such a high idle. Does it need a higher idle for oil pressure or cooling? 750 seems to be the minimum, at 700 it spins the alternator a little too slow for running the radiator fan, heater, lights, and stereo.

I am not sure why idle is at like 850-950 (from my memory) for sure oil pressure would be slightly higher but i think it just being 4 cylinder they don't want it to low .
What do you have ignition timing set to the EECIV was heavy on electronic advance with it disconnected it was like 10-13deg depending on ECU and had like 20deg advance .
I would try and keep it close to stock idle speed something around 800-900 range .(I think stock was 750 w/o IAC plugged in and 850 with it in ) .

The typical reason for that in the 914 world is thought to be backfires in the intake. Just one bad one is thought to be able to warp the flap from overpressure.

Every once in a while I discover I've somehow missed an entire epic build thread, and sit and scratch my head trying to figure out how...

This one qualifies.

amcpacer, if you're still reading this, congrats on the project and thanks for sharing it here!

I have already seen many full-sizes with 4-cyl engines swapped into, but mostly Diesel-powered and rarely turbocharged. Anyway, that's a nice project
