More progress

More pics on how the nose job is progressing. The first 3 pics are of the drivers side mock up. The next 3 are of the passenger side. The next pic is of the corner pieces in their final cut down shape. Finally the last pic shows the large rivets; that replaced the original screws, holding the new front piece onto the bumper.

How did you shape the foam, with a sander?

What type of release agent did you use for the silicone gap sealer?

I shaped the foam with a wood rasp and sandpaper of various grits. The release agent I used was plastic wrap between the hood and silicone. The wrap can be seen in the previous pics held to the hood with painters tape.

Looks good. I would like to do something to the nose of my 91 crx. Have you though of using fiberglass over the foam? I have UV cured epoxy that works great. It was made for surfboards. It doesn't cure hard but remains flexible. This would be good for a bumper with foam behind it, but not a hollow fairing as it is too flimsy.

Thanks for the tip on the epoxy. I'll keep it in mind for the fender skirts I plan on doing. I like the idea of a stiff nose for less flexing in the nose though.

oops

Here's what happens when you use too much expanding foam; a minor setback.

Looks like not enough glue between the foam sheets. The expanding foam glues foam sheets together really well.

Actually had I not overfilled behind the aluminum side piece; with super expanding
Great Stuff; the glue might have been good enough to hold it all in place. Too much of a good thing is still to much.

After sanding the painted surfaces down to bare metal; I got out the fiberglass cloth, which in this case was an old pair of fiberglass drapes. Then the mixing and wetting out and applying of the cloth to the car began. This is where I am so far. About 95% done glassing so far.
