No need to tap VSS at the ECU. Tap it near the steering wheel.
You should also verify your VSS signal. Turn ignition On, put the gear in Neutral, and roll the car a few feet back and forth. VSS should toggle between 0v and 5v (not 12v) as the front wheel rolls.
On my civic, I had to use a smaller resistor (try 30k ohms), because 100k made the 0-5v change undetectable by the Guino. If the resistor is too low (like 1k), it messes up the speedo.
