Previous test did not just restore data as hoped.

I am making progress with CLI fdisk command though.

Could use more info. In the terminal type fdisk /dev/disk1 output should show geometry numbers and partition info. Interested in geometry numbers and start and size info for current defined partitions.

I also discovered the command pdisk. fdisk displays the partition information and pdisk will allow us to change and edit the partition entries.

How is your time frame? Would your patience allow me to continue in the morning? Like I said I can do all of the experiments on my system to prove them out. The system is at work though and I'm headed home for now. I'd like to get you a working solution and then post the results. If you get more solutions posted in the mean time and you can wait I can test them on the sacrificial system here at my work. Just thinking of your important data. :-)

I love tackling these kinds of problems. Allows me to learn more about Mac OS.

I can wait. I may have shot myself in the foot by writing something to the drive without thinking.

I have tried the diskwarrior utility but it doesn't seem to want to do anything.

Great. I'll check in with you in the morning.

Glad I can help. It is the least I can do....since I am about to pass you in the garage top 10 MPG standings.

I have done this procedure a couple of times on my linux box. Luckily I had the partition data written down. I just restored the start and size parameters of the individual partitions and it all came back. In your case it is just the 1 partition. No guarantees but at least we can prove it out 'works/doesn't work' on my Mac system first.

later

P.S. The summoning of any "real" Great and Powerful Mac Gurus is welcome.

Checking in...I haven't abandoned you or the cause.

Who would'a thunk I'd get distracted by actual work at work?

Update: current experiments have shown data loss with the repartition events. Shouldn't be the case if you just resized and added more partitions. The start sector of the 1st partition should not have moved or changed. This is the puzzling part.
You didn't change the partition type.. I'm sure there was no need. You just added more partitions at the end of the one big one. Has this drive always been 'Apple partition Map' type?

Just noticed... Its a Terabyte drive- wow! should have plenty of room for a while.
