I just got my UG yesterday, yes there are programmable alarms. If you were going to set them I would go for throttle position and RPM. Those are going to be the most fuel consumable raw data values.

If you don't want all that jazz, there would be a possibility of rigging an alarm system electronically or mechanically to your Throttle body.

For throttle position mechanically you could rig a standard bike brake cable to pull some sort of alarm (electric) or mechanical indicator (spring + Marked Bar for position + green/yellow/red color). If you need more details about how that would work I could give you a follow up, but truthfully for the design time and implementation I would just go for an UG. Unless you have a non-OBDII vehicle. :-)

Can you set the alarm to instant MPG? Or the "load" equivalent? That's what I would want for driving with load - at cruise on the open road.

My vehicle is NOT OBDII, but for the sake of simplicity, I was wondering about using the OBDII data, just to think of something that would work well, and with the maximum amount of modern vehicles.

That UltraGauge sounds really interesting. The description seems to indicate pretty much all the features I could think of.

Price looks nice to - $60-$70.

I did notice that it DOESN'T support METRIC measurements!
Sorry Canada. Sorry Europe. Er, um, pretty much EVERYONE outside the US.....

They are working on adding metric support in the next update that should be out in Q1 2011.

Just got an android phone, that's Google's new operating system. The app I downloaded for it uses the built in gps to tell you current speed and alarm for when you exceed set speed. Also has trip information like miles traveled, travel time, min max speed, average speed,0-60 and 1/4mile.

Also saw someone wrote a program that uses a blue tooth adapter to read obdII port. Has the possibility to be better then the ScanGauge or Ultragauge only limited by software written for it, plus with 1ghz processor it can do a little more then the ScanGauge/Ultragauge.

I still think that a dedicated tool for vehicle instrumentation makes a lot of sense. Yes an android CAN do it, but if someone else in your family needs the car when you need your phone then there goes that tank.

Only driven 30 miles with it, still need to top off the tank and zero the gauge. then get a proper calibration after I use fuel out of the tank.

I might start tinkering with the alarms at one point, but I've been still working on setting up the 18 custom display gauges.

I'm not 100% sure what can be set to alarm. Pretty sure most standard gauges can be.

All that be said, I don't think you'll be able to use the UG with an non-OBDII vehicle. (not sure if it gets information from the OBDI port).

Your best bet would be vacuum gauge, or some type of variable resistor wired to the throttle.
