Just got my new plates for the Citicar in the mail.

Like the Electric Motorcycle, they are Hobbyist plates. Hobbyist plates are similar to collector plates, only they are for homebuilt, modified, and hotrod vehicles.

They are "permanent plates" in that you don't have to pay an annual renewal. The downside is that they cost double to get, and you can't drive the vehicle in January. (Although there is a temp pass you can get in case you have to go to a car show in January, for example)

I originally thought the number would be the same as is on the motorcycle, but with an "A" added. Hobbyist plate-holders each get their own, personal number. Oddly, the number is different between cycles and cars!

No, I haven't talked insurance yet.

I figured it would be a while before I actually use this car on any sort of regular basis. First, it needs some fixing up, and after that, IT'S WINTER!

My insurance agent is a very helpful lady. I had no trouble with the Metro or the motorcycle. The Citicar will be odd because it's old and a very odd brand name.

Kind of a nightmare here. I had a terrific personalized motorcycle plate, but CA.D.M.V. refused my having it even though the former owner didn't want it. Plain old motorcycle plate, but State Farm insured it so easily, that I felt obligated to put a State Farm sticker on!

" State Farm insured it so easily "

Is it insured all year, or seasonal similar to a motorcycle policy?

6 months - less than $50. Just like a year-round motorcycle (under $100./year).

My motorcycle costs $75 to insure (annually!).

I am hoping the Citi isn't too much!

Probably location. The car is way too much here, but it is still low compared with newer cars. Minimum miles, long-term driver helps, but what helps most is driving a 14 year old surviver! That City-EL is not a long distance hauler, so the car is a must.

Ben, I got insurance from Progressive, around $120 per year, and you are older then I and are married so it should be cheaper then a single person like me with two speeding tickets (one is for 3mph over), so I would check with them, in wisconsin I couldn't find anyone else to insure an electric car.
