I am extremely interested in this topic, and as I only use breaks for emergencies or under 10 mph, aka, parking my car, and want to cover my wheels wothout ruining their visibility.

Yeah, I have them on my front wheels. When I first bought them I thought they would help, but they don't actually seal the front from the back, so air is still getting through. They are meant to go on most wheels, so the gap between the rear of the wheel and the brake dust cover is big.

Today I use them for their original purpose, aka reduce dust. This helps me because my pizza pans *collect* all the dust that comes off my pads and transfers them to my hands when I remove the pizza pans to check the air.

Dust comes from both the pad and the cast iron rotor. Cheap pads wear the pad faster, ceramic matrix type pads eat the rotors.

I would think using those fanblade-like cover thing-a-ma-bobs creating turbulent air to push the dust away. That's got to take some energy.

Exactly. If I time everything right (and "Lady Luck" is riding with me) I can get through my morning commute with 4 applications of the brakes, or my after-work commute with 3. I had to use them 5 times this afternoon.

My brake pads on my Mustang are factory original with 8mm lining left on the front pads and 10mm left on the rear pads at last service.

wheels

In the mod-data-sticky there is some data from the Trans Am Firebird wind tunnel research which might help with numbers.

I've had these on the front of my smart for about a year and they do keep the dust off but I didn't notice any mpg change. I just put on some ceramic pads from O'Rielly's about a month ago and there is NO dust on the fronts now.So what do I do? I just got finished making and installing some disks to cover all 4 of the alloy wheels for better aerodynamics so the dust would be hidden anyway. Chumly
