Interestingly, horse transportation ends up emitting about the same amount of CO2 per mile as a car, it's just that the CO2 it emits is part of a carbon cycle whereas petrol is not really, and least not in reasonable timeframes.
... and we tend to feed horses with crop food rather than strictly wild growing grasses. That means farming and that means petrol consumption and clearing of land for crop use.

Not to mention the horses crapping all over the streets as in my hometown Porto Alegre. Carts were supposed to be outlawed before 2013, but AFAIK they were not outlawed yet. |

Horses have a single stomach. They can't extract nutrition from plain green grass like a cow can. They need fruits vegetables, grains/seeds, tubers, lygumes, ect.

Hay has seeds. If you're going to feed a horse only hay it has to be some pretty good hay.

When my grandfather had horses, once in a while he used to buy carrots for them as a treat. I don't know why, but horses seem to be addicted to carrots. |
