For the exhaust exit, if you are relocating it anyway, piping it to exit behind the rear tire or at the trailing edge, the exiting gasses will play a small part in filling the low pressure void thereby reducing drag. I seem to remember a picture of a faired NSU that did this. Just thought it was a neat idea.
A more sefisticated exhaust exit/location will have to wait for the next round of improvements. Some more pic's of baby steps. You can see the new exhaust exit pipe, and the shape. What remains is the section behind the rear tire.

Sorry couldn't resist. I told my wife my only mistress would be motorcycles.

Seriously, yeah, the Buell Blast does pretty well with mpg.

I have been makeing steady progress with the rear section. I can now go back to some more work on the front end for a while. With the new exhaust exits I can direct the exhaust flow parallel with the air steam, for better aero...

It is 24 inches wide [60cm] and standes about 60 inches tall [150cm] and is 120 inches long [3 meters]. The height and width are about the same as any bike with rider, it's just that on a normal bike with rider, you don't notice it as much.
On the next project I may be able to reduce the length by 50 cm with a better design. The next project is a 1988 Honda CBR600 that I will take to the Boneville Salt Flats to see if I can make it into the 150 mph Club!
The CBR 600 will be 60cm wide, 140cm tall, and 2.5 m long. after that I will take it to the Vetter Challenge to see if I can get over 100 mpg and then I will see how fast it will go in a quarter mile.
Then It will be a real high performance bike.

It is April 21 and the VT500 will not be ready for the May 4-5 Vetter Challenge at Carmel. The new deadline is the Vetter Challenge in mid Ohio in June. What remains to be done is the front body work, lights and re-wireing, plus all the small details...

It will be interesting to see if the GS500 can get better than 80mpg at Carmel.

the GS 500 managed 69.9 mpg which is less than I had hoped for but quit good considering the speed of the event, which was set by the lead bike: a California state police bike. and yes the pace was the way most people drive which turned out to be at least 10 mph over the posted speed limits! Quit a few people had a hard time keeping up. I got to do 3 laps of Laguna Seca rather than the 2 laps that most of the others did. on the 3rd lap I probably managed to do one or two of the corners half desent! The cork screw is a blind entry and it would take 10 or more practice laps to get it right...

Had the motor running today for the first time in 4 years, it idles well under chocke/enrichment but will not speed up when the throatle is opened, it just quits, so I will need to take it apart and clean it. I have decided to relocate the speedo/tachometer away from the steering head onto the fairing mount so that is does not rotate with the steering. This will also avoid much of the rewirering needed if I leave the guages in there original location.
