The post is similar, but the catch is a metal disk with a hole and a cam that pulls on the head of the post. Another could be a sliding bar with a hole and a ramped slot to pull on the post.

Well, I did a little smoothing on the underside of the hatch door and gluing in some patches early in the week , but I've been "under the weather" for a few days and have not ventured outside until today. I'll get back to smoothing soon, and I'll post some pictures.

Holy cow, join the club brother, I just got done with the cold from hell! Four solid days of feeling like crap, two solid weeks of coughing up lung cookies.
Hope you get better soon. Looking forward to more updates!

Okay, the hatch is about halfway smoothed and the opening is better, too. There is a fairly major "pinch" in the 'C' pillar area - I've got more patching to do; which is hard to do until the weather gets warm enough to glue.
I'm finding that hand sanding with a foam block and 120 grit is working well - much more controllable and accurate than the 5" random orbital sander. And when I can afford it I need to buy a couple of new tools (the long flexible sander and an oscillating saw) - and I thin I'll need the Smart ForTwo windshield fairly soon, too.
I will start making some cradle frames out of the 2" foam I bought last spring; so I can turn the car on its sides and upside down.

All the hard work you're doing is definitely motivating me to get started on my trike. It's looking awesome.

Yes, it is about 6'-8" or 6'-9" long, which is a bit less than half the length of the car. Remember that I have to use my camera lens at full wide angle so proportions get a little warped. I'm inside the shelter so there is not much room to stand far enough away to show much. And the taper and curves make things recede and look different, as well.

Looking really good, Neil!
This thing has been in your head so long, and on the computer screen, I'm wondering what your thoughts are now that it's 'in the flesh' in front of you. Is it larger or smaller than what you had imagined? Any surprises?
