Existential is off the table. Degree of stress to various species is where the rational discussion is.
Those proclaiming existential aren't engaged in a debate of reason, but regurgitating religious dogma. We can take them as seriously as the guy on the street corner proclaiming the return of Jesus in 12 years.

* Anaerobic thermophiles are the only thing which could exist within the heavy bombardment period, which had a duration of millions of years.
* The 'great oxygenation event' would come much later.
* The rodents we evolved from didn't take off until after the meteor took out the dinosaurs, 65-million years ago.
* Existential 'IS' on the table. It's the only conclusion that can be drawn from the models.
* The jury's out on the timeline, but as observations, computers, and models improve, they'll continue to sneak up on harder numbers.
* There is no paleo record of climate change which indicated the magnitude, and velocity that we're presently witnessing.
* We're asked not to mention religion.

ocean acidification
Ocean acidification may not be 'true,' however, according to Scripps, and nineteen other leading oceanographic research centers, ocean acidification is a fact.
* Abyssal ( deep ocean ) water, at 3,000-meters depth or below = 95% of all ocean water.
* Abyssal organic matter cycling in seafloor sediment helps buffer delta-pH and the effects of acidification.
* Abyssal water will rise by 1-C over the next 85-years, increasing the metabolic rate for deep organisms, requiring an increase in nutrients, while they'll be deprived by 50% of nutrients by then, due to global warming.
* Carbonic acid ( H2CO3 ) will only concentrate as a feedback.
* Loss of sea ice drives the genesis of the entire mechanism.
* Afterwards, warm surface water stratification prevents what feeble nutrient is remaining from settling/ burial.

Makes you wonder, are there more life forms in the abyssal waters or the continental crusts.

I believe that the Russians have drilled the deepest bore hole, at around 10-miles depth, so whatever came out of that hole would represent out deepest 'look' into the crust.
Submersibles, investigating life around hydrothermal vents on the seafloor have to keep some distance due to extreme temperatures.
NASA probably have the most data, as we'll be going to Enceladus to look for life at the south polar region.
There's an internal ocean, heated by Roche tidal effects which warms it, and there they be some form of life there, as concentrated organic molecules have been detected by Cassini, in erupting geyser plumes shooting into space.

What is the limiting factor for depth of drilling? Does the drill rod get too heavy?
