Since we're in the off-topic area already, I'd like to take this thread slightly off topic to ask: Who are these CSX and Union Pacific and BNSF commercials directed at? Me, the consumer? I can't go to the store and pick out clothes and lumber that were specifically only transported by one of three train brands, so it kind of seems like a wasted commercial.
I would also think that if their target audience is companies that need to ship a lot of stuff, they would already know that a train would be the most efficient means of moving their stuff.
Am I missing something?

Yup. See that on I-5 between Sacramento and LA all the time. Two trucks decide to hog both lanes as one passes the other by going 0.1 mph faster. As soon as he pulls back over, everybody's in passing gear to get back up to their normal speed.

It'd seem like you'd get far more efficiency improvement by electrifying the railroads - especially where they go over mountains, and the braking of a descending train powers the one climbing.

If I had to guess, I'd say they're aimed at boosting stock prices. After all, one of the drawbacks of naming your company with a few letters is that many people won't have the slightest clue as to what your product/service is.

Its the same as saying a 15 passenger van that gets 12mpg gets 180 mpg per passenger.
