Windows 7 copy or file move dialog. Why is there an option not to see progress, so it doesn't spend 60% of the time involved counting files and adding up their size...

That reminds me of a "feature" in Win95 with a big transfer. If the time estimate went past a certain point, it would just say, "2147234589 years remaining".

...maybe that was just one of those MS "Easter Eggs" that was really the number of known bugs (wink, wink)!

All software has known bugs or incomplete features, its the nature of the game - just like cars have known shortcomings that get fixed over time.

The copying / moving progress bar issue is that its an inconvenience (the pause whilst it calculates how many / big) caused by a convenience (the desire to show progress) not the feature (copying or moving). To use a car analogy its like your car deciding to display a countdown to stopping but delaying the application of your brakes whilst it works out what the steps on the countdown should be.

Albeit with less severe results perhaps

EDIT - To get round this XCOPY or ROBOCOPY are your friend...

A daily annoyance is the dumb*** neighbor autostarting his pile of junk (that's parked right below my bedroom window) half an hour before he goes.

Ask him where he gets gas so cheap that he can waste it.
