What makes you think that's all that's coming out of the tailpipe ?
Complete combustion is utopic.

Obviously it's the soot particles going into everyone's lungs.
The smaller they are - like with DPFs - the worse they also are.
Like asbestos, they go deep into the lungs.

Gotta love that smoke-belching diesel

Basically, all fine dust can be harmful to your lungs.

Benzene has always been known to be cancerous, and isn't it a constituent *in* diesel fuel, albeit in only small amounts?

Not in diesel fuel, maybe you are thinking of gasoline.

That's rich. One of the most studied and documented phenomenon, and all you can do is call them puddingheads.

Those same puddingheads are now trying to scare people into giving up diesel engines.

Wow. I thought this would have turned into a worthwhile discussion, but lack of maturity has dictated otherwise.

tvago, your comments are reminiscent of a sarcastic eighth grader. Please do not post in this thread anymore unless you plan to contribute. I don't care if you disagree, but please do so in a tactful way.

I DID meaningfully contribute. You just chose to ignore it. "Smoking is taboo" is not a meaningful response.

When no less then the American Cancer Institute puts out a yearly report that pretty much rebuts the entire premise of this WHO report, all you can say is "Smoking is taboo"? Does it not strike you at all as odd that, for all of the people who drive diesels every day, and for all those who use heating oil (and who even work WOOD of all things), that LUNG CANCER incidence rates have been steadily falling since 1990?

But, if you want to continue to be skeeered, go right on ahead.

Oh, and you can take your forum police hat and shove it up your rear end. If the premise, that diesel exhaust somehow needs to be controlled as a carcinogen, is such a strong idea that can stand on its own, then it should be able to stand up to ridicule.

Oh, and here's another little thought from this guy who has the mentality of a sarcastic eighth grader (Civility? What's that?)

What do you suppose would happen, if the WHO were to successfully manage to get diesel particulates classified as a carcinogen by all of the relevant authorities? Do you think that daily life would continue as it stands now?

Or do you think that the price of everything in the stores would skyrocket, as diesels are swept off the road en masse? What would happen to all of them wonderful diesel-powered trains, and all the cargo they would otherwise carry? Diesel backup generators at hospitals? Forget it! When the next power brown- or blackout occurs, all them patients on life support should just die, instead! Wouldn't heavy construction pretty much come to a halt for lack of all of them diesel powered construction machinery? And what about other critical infrastructure that depends on diesel power (either primarily or as a backup)?

What's going to filter out all of that worrisome particulate matter? What would you think would happen to all of that equipment when it is realized that it's impossible to filter out something that was declared to be a carcinogen?

too much correlation, not enough causation.

they ever come up with the reason the ice ages started and ended?

From the American Cancer Society:
Diesel Exhaust

Seems they agree with the WHO.

Ever go to a third world city and witness the constant smoke looming in the air? It made me physically ill in no time, but that's because my body isn't used to it. These smoke infested cities is what the WHO is mostly concerned about.
