Oldies Diesel Good Idea

I think 50/60s classics would be really cool with a diesel. I'm interested in putting a diesel in my '65 Ford Galaxy Convertible. It has a 390 in it right now. How hard do you guys think a swap would be? What diesel engine would you start with? Thanks and good luck with your classic swaps.

Too bad it's illegal for most of you to go to Cuba. I've been twice for vacations, and it's crazy to see 1940-1950s cars EVERYWHERE, running with whatever engines they could find to keep them going - mostly farm tractors. It's weird watching a 52 Chevy roll by with a 4-banger diesel under the hood.
During the revolution all the rich Americans escaped, leaving their cars behind. Most of them are still running in one way or another.

Nobody is getting in trouble for going to Cuba anymore. One guy went to Cuba several times and turned himself to the U.S. State Department with evidence of his visits, and they told him to stop wasting their time.

That's good news. Silly politics is finally subsiding?

Back to diesels. Even from a performance standpoint they make sense. An older 5.9L Cummins out of a Dodge pickup is only a couple hundred pounds more than a big block V8. But they can be modified to push over 1000 HP far cheaper and more reliably, with the added bonus of being driveable on the street and probably capable of over 30 mpg if driven nicely. Try that with a hot V8!

The first diesel conversion I saw was a 70s Chevy C-10 with the 350ci replaced by a GMC 3-51 industrial engine (3 cyl. 51ci per cyl.) mated to a Clark 5 spd trans. It was built by the county highway superintendant and got 20+ mpg.

Pretty good, considering 2-stroke Detroit engines were notoriously crappy for fuel economy.

newb with a 55 buick

Hey all. I am working diligently at putting a 6.2 GM diesel into my 55 buick special. I obviously plan to run veg oil when complete. This may be the only site my poor old car fits in. The traditional hot rodders hate diesel. The buick guys aren't a big fan of the swap and most diesel forums are based on trucks. I am excited to see more on this thread.

That sounds like a very cool project! How about starting a new thread with lot of pictures and details?
