Doing some math

The thread on oil prices rising again had me thinking, "What did I actually save by trying to hypermile?"

So I took my milage since I started the fuel log, average "lifetime" mileage, EPA milage, and the average price of regular gas in my area in the same time frame and ran the numbers. Total milage as of last fill:15,706 miles; average price for the same date range: $2.853/gal.

I also looked at a much worse milage. Good thing I don't drive an SUV

Cost$1,237.34$1,545.44$2,489.87
Savings$368.500$-944.44

I think that paid for my MPGuino :-)

I like to go a step further, and figure out how many "free miles" hypermiling got me. In your case: 15,706-((29/38.08)*15,706) = 3,745 miles!

Yeah, that ought to be the measure for non-'milers. Look, I drove from "x" to "y" "z" times for free last year! Are you interested to know how?

Let them simmer in envy for a few minutes, then unleash the fury of mathematics!

You made me look. Here are my fuel log totals between 12/1/2007 and 6/18/2009 :

Code:
Total Miles : 32004.20
Total Gallons : 756.21
Total MPG : 42.32
Now, assuming my car's (new) EPA MPG for those gallons, I get only 20K+ miles :

Code:
Total Miles : 20417.67
Total Gallons : 756.21
Total MPG : 27.00
Subtract the total miles (32004 - 20417), and that makes 11587 free miles.

Alternatively, assuming the EPA MPG for the total miles and I calculate a new total gallons :

Code:
Total Miles : 32004.20
Total Gallons : 1185.34
Total MPG : 27.00
Subtract the real gallons (1185 - 756), and that makes 429 gallons saved. Multiply 429 by "cheap" $2.50 gas, and that's a savings of over $1000 in about 18 months, or about $55 a month. Not too shabby.

damn, u saved 370dollars, that is nice.

let me add up.
from july 4th last year till my last fill up.
24512 miles.in less than a year.(and that is just my work truck)
884.697 gallons.
that gives me 27.70 miles per gallon.
at three dollars a gallon that would be
$2654.091

but at epa 17 combined
24512 miles would be
1441.88gallons @3.00 per gallon
4325.64 dollars.
a difference of
1671.55 bucks

yeah that paid for my scangauge.....

but i was getting 22.5 mpg before hypermiling.
so that is 1089.43 gallons at 3 dollare per gallon
3268.27dollars for a difference of
614.18 dollars....

so 5 mpg saved over 600 bucks..or 51 bucks a month.
but at epa like most people get. i saved 139.30 a month...

at epa 17 combined i would of drove 15039.73miles on 884.69 gallons
i got 9473 free miles. last year..
