Lyft is having a promotion, at least in the Phoenix area, of guaranteeing $800 per week (for the first four weeks). Apparently, you need to be logged in fifty hours(!), drive 35 rides, and accept 90% of rides. This is limited to the first thousand applicants.
Of course, my car is way too old, but I could rent a car through Enterprise for $660 (for a month).
I do not work full-time, but I already spend a couple hours a day driving--they combine to 30 hours before planning activities for my clients, but that is before cancellations and no-shows. I have not had any cancellations this week, but have already had five no-shows! I receive half pay when they are not there, but I never know what to do with the forty minutes or so I have left over.
Can I work eighty hours a week for four weeks, mostly driving, to make around $2,500 more than my permanent (I hope!) job?
That permanent job pays about the same amount, but I cannot pick up extra hours.
Anyway, I need to get back to my progress reports. Those are due in four days.

Reason: Specified the rental would be for a month.

$140 for 50 hours of your time? Sounds like a great deal for Enterprise.
Not sure where the $2500/4 comes from. Rounding up from $2400 and running the rental 'off-book'?

My friend has been driving Uber for the past month in his 2015 Acura TLX. He has decided to quit driving because the money isn't so great after you factor in depreciation, fuel, wear and tear, maintenance, etc. One of his fares was on drugs and ran and jumped onto the trunk of his car, denting it.
I wouldn't drive Uber or Lyft unless I was desperate and couldn't find a job anywhere else. Heck, you'd do better as a general laborer for a contractor. Certainly you would do better working at Costco.
BTW, Uber requires the cars to be 10 years old or newer, which means they will have higher depreciation than if you could drive a 15 year old junker.

Uber drivers will be the first up against the wall when their autonomous [flying] vehicle plans are implemented.

I updated my post to specify the $660 rental is for a month, so $165. $800 - $165 = 635!
$635 / 50 = 12.70 an hour, while I quickly work myself into exhaustion-fed insanity!
I really do not see a downside!

I'm actually about to start driving for Uber... No bonus offered currently, but I'm driving in WV, where they just established service... All they ask is an 05-up car, four doors, decent cosmetic shape... I actually asked about aero mods, and they're allowed(I'll have to see how the riders feel about the skirts and grille blocks)... I'll have to re-attach my passenger wiper... The main problem for me is either city they have listed to drive in, is quite a commute from home... I'm thinking of it as a second job, rather than just making extra on my way to work though... Commute the 100 miles, drive two seven hour shifts with a break in between, and drive home...

The legal phrases about insurance with Uber sound like that once you're online with the app, they provide the additional coverage, part of the reason they take the 25% off the top of your fare... I'll certainly ask about insurance now that you bring it up, would hate to be in the wrong there, and incur a big fine/lawsuit...

Yeah, Uber covers the driver. My friend had a drugged out fare jump on his trunk a couple weeks ago and Uber is paying $400 to repair it.

Actually autonomous vehicles is more or less the end game of Uber

Not totally. We have the same situation but you can still order regular taxi's with the app, which I greatly prefer over street hailing or ordering a taxi over the phone. At least now the taxi actually shows up, the ETA tracking is good and no hassle with paying at the end of the ride.
