Eco-Curious

I drive a 2009 Aveo5. I've had it since September 2008 and I started tracking my mileage through the last four fill-ups.

Without doing any modifications at all, I'm currently getting 27-28 in the city.

My car is a bare-bones driveable piece of sunshine - just how I wanted it. Manual trans, no A/C, manual locks, windows, AM/FM only radio, etc. I feel like a kid again!

I really enjoy driving the little bugger and came across this website so I thought I'd join the party and learn up on how to stretch it past 30 mpg in the city.

The only thing I don't like about the car is that the gear ratios are so close. Sometimes I'll wind up in 2nd and just go to 4th (or 3rd to 5th). In suburban Detroit traffic, it's intimidating at times to drive a "modest" 65 on the highway. I'd drive 55 if I wasn't afraid of getting run over.

What about me otherwise? My other car is a Hummer. While that would be a funny bumper sticker for my Aveo, it's actually the truth (at the moment). H3 lease ends later this year - thinking Camaro...

I love to drive - that's all that matters.

Not to be too cynical, but that's a lot of money to invest - supposedly a payoff point along the way as learn how to use less fuel, right... What is your experience with this unit and how could I - a rookie sipper - benefit from it? Looks like something I will eventually get once I learn about and apply gas-saving driving habits.

Based on my experience on other forums, I'm probably about to be chewed out for not using the search function. Just testing the waters.

Welcome to EM! I understand the cost issue. The good news is that you can use the SG for other stuff and other cars. My friend just got a new Dodge Charger. I was able to plug my SG into it and check how it runs. You can also use it to scan for error codes. Knowing the error code could pay off the next time you take it to the garage and tell *them* why the SES light is on.

I like the scangauge, it works well, is easy to see, blah blah blah. If you think you'll get it, it's best to get it earlier, since it will help you more the less you know about ecodriving.

There's a forum group buy for $140 for it, also.

And, failing that, you can pick up a prebuilt mpguino, but cheaper, but more work,

Ok - I'm soon to be the proud owner of a cool new electric Eco-Toy. I'm going to go celebrate by driving around town at no more than 1500 rpm.
