new wiki registrations suspended

I did some reading this AM and realized I didn't need an admin account to change the the wiki config (I could do it via FTP).

So I changed it to prevent new user registrations.

I also saw that it was already set so anonymous users could not edit pages (but that wasn't the problem anyway).

Do we think that will be enough until I sort out wiki admin issues with Ben?

Since I haven't been monitoring things, I'm not sure if the spammers were always creating new accounts to do their dastardly deeds, or if they were returning and using existing ones.

...locking *everything* until the dust settles sounds good to me.

...if something *earth-shattering* absolutely MUST be immediately added to the Wiki, then that individual could be granted access as needed. Then have it locked again.

We should add a message to the main page to tell people that it has been locked due to spam problems and who to contact if they want something updated.

I took your advice, Tele Man: the wiki is now locked to all except those with admin rights. The admins are now:

daox
MetroMPG
saand
WeatherSpotter-9828
SVOboy

I heard from Ben (SVOboy) today (yay!). Will be talking to him tomorrow in detail about all this.

FYI, we have sorted out the admin issues - Tim (daox) is now the primary wiki administrator.

I'll let him fill you in on the rest once he's had a chance to survey the mess.

I have a pretty good background in PHP and other programming langs, I might be able to help link up the logins if you desire that result. The biggest problem I see with that is what to do with the existing users on the wiki that has made posts, delete the accounts, or add them to the EM forum.

I agree with the few others, access to edit the pages on the wiki should be limited to ecomodder users atleast. If someone has something to post, 99% of the time they will already be a member, and if not, it isn't hard to sign up.

I think the wiki could be a really great tool to find info compaired to trying to search the forum, read though 100s of posts to understand the answer to a question you have. It could be possible to drop the wiki and have someone in charge of a section of the site that stores the details similar to the wiki layout.

We've made some changes and the wiki is now open again. It isn't spam proof, but we'll be monitoring how things go with the spam and making changes as needed. Still, please notify us (me) if there is anything spammy that you notice.

As of now the main page is only updatable by the admins and mods, so if there is something there that needs updating you'll have to message one of them. All the real info that would need updating is on other pages though so this shouldn't happen often.

I just got done deleting 15k+ pages of spam. I know I at least also nabbed one person's Civic mpguino page. It has been restored, but there may be a few more. Just let me know if there is something missing and I'll get it restored.

And that's probably just the tip of the iceberg...
