electric ac and ps questions

hello i am itending on getting an electric ac and power steering things...

thing is it needs to be small enough to fit under the hood of a 95 civic and it must not use too much electricity.

i am concidering swapping my bulky stock battery with a motor cycle battery for weight reduction, but using electrical ps and ac sounds like my car would be needing some more juice.

anybody know where to find theis things?

or any ideas?

I believe the '95 Civics had a manual steering option available. More turns lock-to-lock, but it eliminates the power steering system completely.

Metalshark,
I am not all that familiar with Civics but these may provide a starting point.

I understand Prius uses an electric a/c as does the Civic Hybrid. There may be other as well.

For the p/s are you looking for ALL electric or electric power and hydraulic activation?
For the second look at a Saturn Astra and some of the VW models of recent years.

Good luck with it all.

Cheers , Pete.

I dont have a civic i was just assuming that the engine bay to my car is about the same size as a 95 civic.

My car, the Hyundai Accent dosnt have a manual steering option.

I understand that hybrids have electric power steering but they also weigh a lot more then my car, they have more energy sources, and a bigger engine bay.

does the Honda insite have an electric power steering and ac.

(ac is more important I can alway take out the ps pump and loop the lines.)
asking because I got a baby on the way and a controlled air climate is better then suffering through the heat (i live in southern California so its always hot)

Insights AC is belt driven. The Accord hybrid's was electrical, but it ran off the IMA battery pack

The PS is electrical, but depending on the design of your steering knuckles, and track width I don't think you'd be able to adapt it to an Accent, but no harm in trying if you could get one cheep. The Insight uses a rack and pinion steering setup.

I don't think the insight had electric a/c but I'm not sure. You could always just remove the power steering and I've seen some electric a/c kits out there that you can just buy off the (internet) shelf.

Good luck,

Odd; the two parts sites I checked seem to indicate that a manual rack is available. I'm not sure if this is a mistake on their part, or if there was a basic model (maybe sold to rental agencies?) that had manual steering. At any rate, perhaps an earlier model offers a rack that fits.

My Saturn Ion has standard electric power steering. It would probably be difficult to retrofit, as it's a larger car. You can also drive your pump with an electric motor, though it would take a large draw at 12V, and you'd most likely have to keep a regular-sized battery to cover any draws beyond what the alternator can put out.

I just did some searches on ebay for electric a/c but got zip? Where do you buy electric a/c kits?

I want one. Otherwise I will have to sell my car and buy a a/c model.

No wait. Found these via google:
!Portable 12-Volt Swampy Air Conditioners & Evaporative Coolers. is a swamp cooler that wont function well in humid places (florida, tropical islands etc)

Lubra New Zealand Limited - draws 5amps at 230v, would require a large expensive inverter and draw nearly 100amps from a 12v system!!! suit 65cubic meter space (motorhome) so if a car model is available, will draw at least 25amps

KOOLERAIRE?Portable A/C: Roshgo Corporation needs ice but cheap at $40, kind of superinconvient if you ask me.

Bottom line. Effective a/c uses up to 5hp. Hard to beat a engine driven compressor unless you want to muck around with ice every morning and run out of cool later in the day.

I think the guys at cleanmpg have a chest harness that straps kinda a block of ice to your chest....
