It was the same with Preston Tucker's helicopter engines.

I think it takes a special kind of chutzpah to put out a huge advertising campaign for something that doesn't exist.

On the other hand, if they want to generate interest - in order to sell more when they do produce them - so they can recoup their investment, how else could they do it?
It is fine to be skeptical, but it is also too easy to be cynical.

Cynical would have been two years ago. Now it's well within the borders of skeptical.
That said, I want one. I really do, but it keeps looking less and less likely that I'll ever get the chance.

Over a month ago Elio was excited to post pictures of a half assembled prototype engine. Still no updates with a complete engine, pics of something on a dyno, etc, which tells me it isn't to that point yet. Knowing how these things work, it's not surprising me at all, but goes to reinforce the question - when do they expect to have this done and in production? Website still says 2015, I still say that 1-2 year optimistic. Which puts the whole thing a few years behind to original forecast.

I fail to see why they don't start pumping out the shells and builds (aren't they paying for a facility to build them right now?) to people, and let the crafty people get started.
Heck, maybe that will give them a good jump start on which engine they should be using right now.

Unfortunately everyone's Elio they finish themselves would represent Elio. So when someone has one that's half baked, in primer, bad fitment of parts, isn't getting good mileage, something breaks or otherwise it's going to look bad on Elio in the public's eye.

Why a kit? Why not a rolling full build, besides engine? 5k and everything but the engine? Labeled as home built, and good to go.
