What they should have done is take an existing engine, like the 1.0L Ecoboost, and used that instead of all this "we're going to develop a new, proprietary engine at great expense so we can trumpet it all over our advertising!" Especially when they have only raised $65 million in their now-years-long campaign, and can't start production without an additional $200 million.

Even better a simple, cheap existing engine. I bet you can't get a turn key intake to oil pan, all accessories, 1.0 ecoboost with transmission for $7000 new. I think their best bet would have been in the parallel twin motorcycle world.

Notice it says "an engine!" Not "the engine".

Well, the article says:

So the motor, produced for Elio Motors by Detroit-based engineering company IAV, is finally done and in a prototype car that will have its sheet pulled off on the floor of the Los Angeles Auto Show this week (Thursday morning, specifically).

Is there someone in the LA area that can make it to this? I hope so! Take lots of pictures and/or videos, please.

If I had a few Million dollars to play with I could whip up CAD data of it all, get a rapid-prototype engine out there, and hire a fabrication shop to make a prototype... and periodically rework this or that on it. All by myself.
