Somehow my pics broke, and I don't see a way to fix the original post. So here they are again... Kudos to Ben98gs, who inspired all the in-dash builds.

You can do it too, if you're not scared of messing up the cluster. Oh BTW- this DOES mess up the cluster, meaning irrevocable damage done. But if you screw it up, the non-tach ones are only 20-30 bucks, don't worry. Go for it!
Super-quick how to:
1)Starting with a Geo Metro instrument cluster, no tach. Mine has no lights in the center. Remove from car.
2) Open the casing, measure, mark, cut, until you have enough room:
3)Doesn't fit yet? Repeat step two......Lather, rinse, repeat.
Should end up like this:
Hope this helps someone.

Neat installation - a bit of black tape could reduce the stray light at the sides.

I made one of these for a coworker. Here is how I made it.
I used an Arduino box which is heavily modified. Arduino with headers removed, A salvaged RJ11 phone jack from an old PCI soft modem, a standard LCD, and some small push button switches.
I think it turn out really good. I also added in the save data hack into the source code. In my opinion this makes the device much better.
If I had an older car ( I currently have a 2000 MT Insight and 2006 Prius ) I would love to build another one to play around with.

Highly customized enclosure
I got some scissors and hacked up some cardboard and wrapped it with some sweet, sweet tie-dye duct tape

I think pfunk678's enclosure is probably one of my favorites so far, it wins for having the most character for sure. I'm hoping to get some pictures of mine up soon.

I have more pictures of the install, but this one is the end result of mocking and installing it over the week and weekend. Bezel needs detailing but I'll do that when I finish calibrating it.

Looks good... I miss my Integra. Would love to try and hypermile one as they are definitely a bit more fun than the Civic.

It's funny you say that, I keep telling myself I would probably be better of buying a Civic if I really want to get good mileage. I think I'm about at the mileage limit for this car the way it sits. I could do more, but I want to keep it close to stock.
