Fortunately, all of us survived the Bush era, and I am confident we will survive Turnip. Sadly, we will probably consider some future President to be the worst ever.

Most of us survived the Bush era.

I'm troubled by the constant disparagement of the Presidency. One citizen was elevated above the rest of us, temporarily. The false rumors being shopped around during the election cycle were just dirty politics; but when it didn't slacken after the election then it slipped into sedition.

My operative theory is that the Mayan calendar restarting in December, 2012 was rock bottom. In the interregnum between the election and inauguration of the worst President, evah. The current President is an improvement and I'm hopeful that there is someone in this country who can improve thing even more.

Or that they were even still alive.

Trump has to fail because if he doesn't and some outsider comes in to washington and starts fixing thing the politicial establishment has promised to fix for the past 40 years, well that political establishment as we know it is finished.
Lots of life long politicians will be out of work.

The problem with the very few reasonably-minded politicians out there is that they can't do anything without support from the objectionable ones. Even when there is no assassination attempt, the corrupts can simply boycott the proposals presented by a reasonably-minded representative or senator, like it's done in Brazil with most of the projects presented by Jair Bolsonaro.

Back to topic: since Trump was bashing EPA during his campaign, I actually thought he would do some political move to set the Dieselgate in a way that would be quicker and less costly to VW.

We're all praying here. Have you seen our Vice President?

Well, considering that many German companies such as Hatz (which licensed Agrale to manufacture some of its designs for the Brazilian market) and Deutz were more successful with their air-cooled Diesels, it is in fact quite surprising that VW didn't achieve similar results. But anyway, had a Diesel-powered Beetle been more successful, I guess there would be no excuse to the ban on light-duty Diesels in Brazil during the '70s (an effort to develop either biodiesel or straight vegetable oil usage as fuel, similar to the defunct ProÁlcool, would have been more likely).

VW has been buying back hundreds of thousands of their diesel car, so what did they do with them?

Err... Nothing.
