I'd like to see an EV garbage truck. There's no reason to be running these loud diesel engines and worn out brakes at 6am through neighborhoods.

These things normally get 2 MPG. I bet a 100 kWh battery would cover the daily needs with a nice cushion to spare. It would quadruple brake life too.

But then, it's the noise of the truck that has reminded me to run out with the can on many occasions. If they sneak around neighborhoods I'll probably miss a few trash days.

If Musk gets his way the trashcan will fully automatically do a return trip to the dump to empty itself whenever needed!

OK, that BYD - Build Your Dreams - garbage truck link has a video with sound.

No chance to sleep through that when they come round for the bins!

I never really understood why the garbage truck needs to pick up a can, go forward 3', pick up another, then go forward 3' and pick up another...

It's as if neighborhoods weren't built with trash pickup in mind. It should all be in 1 trash bin when they are that close together.

I forgot about the hydraulic pump and the noise it makes. I wonder how efficient it is? Probably need more like 200 kWh to complete a round of garbage pickup considering the pumps and such that have to run.

Forklifts seem to be able to run all day with nissan leaf capacity packs.
For a garbage truck I think most of the losses are from using the huge diesel engine to run a little hydraulic PTO.

This Mercedes Econic is using a diesel truck with an electric tipper. The tipper has a battery that gets recharged each night.

Whoops, yep. Also, according to GCBC last week Tesla delivered 140,317 Model 3s, not 90,000. But the point still stands: you can get a Model 3, and there are more of them running around already than any other Tesla model. It isn't vaporware.
