engine compatibility

heyeveryone,Ihave a 95 and a 96 geo mettro. the 95 waspurchased for the transmission.. I pulled the motor and trans from the 95 and am putting it in the 96. what needs to be swapped over with the trans? since the 95 is obd 1 and the other is 96. I noticed a sensor by the oil pan what is this?

anyone ? should I continue putting the 95 motor in or just use the 96? the 95 still has trans attached, both motors have similar mileage.

Crank position sensor perhaps.

You may have a time of it. I did a 96 to a 94 a while back. It required swapping the manifold and all the fuel injection stuff over to the newer engine.
If there are differences, pull the manifold from your car and mount it to the new(er) engine. The ECM and harness may be different. I'd save lot's of bits and pieces. Look all the electrical connectors over for differences. You may need to swap various items onto the new engine.

well their both fuel injection, o nly differences are obd1 and obd2, imjust not sure if whats under the bottom pylley is a crank sensor or something.. anyone else know?

OBD2 96 Nissans had a sensor that counted the teeth in the flywheel ring gear. It was used to accomplish passive cylinder balance testing to determine which cylinder was not producing as much power as the rest the were operating normally.

Sensor was located in the bellhousing.

If that is what you are trying to describe it is not a functional necessity, but a diagnostic tool. It will give you a check engine light on the second start, and will keep doing it after you reset the check engine light. Second start check engine light indicates a non critical malfunction.

Not sure if your OBD2 works like the Nissan cars in 96, but I am pretty sure it was required so you could check cylinder balance percentages without changing or disconnecting anything, like disconnecting plug wires.

Might need to swap the bellhousing to make it work right, but I am no expert on Metros.

You did not mention if they are 3 or 4 cyl or even auto or stick, there wasn't a whole lot to go on in the initial post.

Also if you are in a testing area you will want to keep the obdii system intact if the resulting frame is a 96.

I didn't know you had looked. I thought they were easy to find. I didn't recommend my favourite group because it goes off topic a lot and thought you'd rather choose yourself. Now, I won't recommend any group for you.
