Probably, I'm not going to check.
I drew this in the 1960s:
Same except the shorty trailer is back to front.

'91 Gol CL which I'm not sure if has the 1.6L Ford-sourced engine or the 1.8L full-blooded Volkswagen one. Next year, this one will be eligible for collector plates in Brazil.

Cute. I wish they'd used the Polo platform for the New Beetle, like the original concept.

It could possibly render the New Beetle closer to become an effective Beetle replacement, but the presumably shorter remaining lifespan for its platform compared to the 4th-generation Golf and Volkswagen not willing to sell any Polo or its other derivatives in the United States and Canada had their role on the switch to the Golf platform. On a sidenote, considering the Polo Classic and the Caddy were made in Argentina and the Beetle was not a strong seller there as it was in Brazil, would be interesting to say the least a New Beetle made in Argentina.
But anyway, if another attempt to create some modern Beetle-shaped car ever reaches production, I would not be surprised if it follows a Baja Bug revival approach.

Volkswagen Nivus, this model is becoming quite successful in Brazil. At the moment its only engine is the 1.0 TSI and the 6-speed automatic transmission is a standard feature. Once it becomes available for regional export I would expect the port-injection 1.6 MSI naturally-aspirated engine to be fitted to the export versions. It's also scheduled to be made in Spain in the next year.

That's a long way from the VW Beetle.

Didn't know that. Well, the first thing I reminded was the Lada Niva.

I was looking through some old files and found this scan.
This was published by Harry Bradley in IIRC VW Trends in 1981. It's basically a Beetle with a Baja hood and stock (but narrowed?) fenders, with flushed side glass.
With modern cars like the Aston-Martin Valkyrie, there is an upper envelope with massive ventilation in the wheelwells. This design could be extended by enlarging the mesh area to cover the entire front and rear quarters.
