It is both.
"the generator reverses roles and spools the compressor. Your turbocharger briefly turns into an electronic supercharger."

It's mainly to minimize/eliminate lag than for big power numbers.

These engines, with electric assist, turbocharging and electric turbocharging, promise to be extremely responsive. Couple that with lower fuel limits, and we could see some huge speed differentials between teams over the course of the race, as people go on different fuel saving and pace strategies.

I doubt this season will be all that boring. Not unless Mercedes or Ferrari runs away with it... but it doesn't seem like they will, at the moment. The teams seem pretty well-matched.

I always liked F1

But its stigma here in USA is as an eccentric cart series for the elitists.
I approve of them going in this direction and challenging the top auto makers to move to the economy side of life too.
Imagine 5 years from now when your new lotus comes hybrid equipped this way.
Ford really needs to up the game on this eco boosted SVO Mustang because it is supposed to represent thier next 10 years of motorsports planning incarnate.
I assume I will be woefully let down!

Lol, said the guy with the 99 Kia Turbo's are generally bad for FE (except in diesels) and the fuel used in all of F1 is immeasurable for CO2 emissions...

One thing I would like to see transferred from F1 is actual DRIVING and OPTIONS to enable DRIVING, not the automated beyond the reach of optimal efficiency mushmobiles we have.

You want to bet they don't have a throttle plate, use the supercharger-alternator to control engine speed through charging the batt-capacitor. Now you are controlling engine power by using the exhaust gases to create electricity and return that electricity to the engine as supercharging.

Formula one is mostly WOT-braking, this will convert exhaust heat energy and inertia into electricity and vice versa.

Bye bye throttle plate or just consider the impeller as one.

Mech

I am skeptical of no throttle. As you say it is largely WOT/Brake, the throttle isn't much of a factor under those conditions (not unlike P&G)

edit: and probably more efficient to keep the turbo spooled up during brief braking vs "stopping" and starting it.

Nothing in F1 is automated with the exception of manual shifting - they have a clutch for the launch at the start, and they use paddles for sequential shifting without a clutch.

But no ABS, no traction control, no stability control, no active suspension. It is "real" driving, as it were.

I've heard it said so many times, but it's mind boggling that people think rich racing drivers start off rich. Just like many athletes, they start off in the middle-income bracket (sometimes lower... Fernando Alonso and Kimi Raikkonen, arguably the alpha-dogs of the driver pecking order, were both sons of poor factory workers).

And this post reminds me of how much I miss FedEX CART. Now that was a US series with international reach, producing some great F1 transplants in the process.

It would be nice for the USA to become better integrated into the international open-wheel racing scene... but considering NASCAR is still a huge draw for drivers, audience and sponsors, I doubt that will come anytime soon.

NASCAR= Go fast turn Left... Draft bump Nturn Left some more.
Pretty sad when you really think about it. oops he is going too fast, add restrictor plates, and body mods.

Not sure how this enhances the Automotive world in any real way.

Thumbs up lotsa off throttle

F1 helmet cam go pro video - Bing Videos

I like it when tires break loose and whole car shakes at 100mph.
I could seriously do that.
