Dimples won't help with aerodynamics on anything other than a ball. Should be a fun car!

Im extremely Jealous !

question about turboing a diesel.
first, can you turbo a non-turbo built diesel engine.
second, if so, can you use any turbo kit or do you need a special kit ?

I'm jealous too, but I would be cured of it completely if it gets dimpled.

Turbo: yes, non turbo diesels can be turbo'd; actually with much greater ease than gassers as they don't need compression ratio reduction, as is often the case with the gassers.

But just any ol' kit? Nope. It needs to be the right size.

80's P/U are cheap as wholly heck to get parts... the past cash for clunkers has loaded junkyards with tons of great parts. I can get a wole new bed for $350 by me seats are cake and so on... best of luck with both of them

Ok, no dimples. Just wondered if it would work as fuel will soon be $4 again. Do however plan to get it at least drivable.
On some super happy fun day news, might get a mid / late 80's Mercedes diesel also. They state it's having electrical issues, drains the battery overnight. Also, it won't go over 20-30 mph. Said it might be loosing compression or the injector pump is failing. It's got the inline 6. Not sure if it's turbo or not.
The truck is to far gone to fix. Unless I wanted a total beater truck. Already have my F-350 Diesel that can fit the whole family. I'm just yanking the engine and tranny and selling them. The rest, scrap.

Picked up the 1986 Ford Tempo Diesel 5 Speed and the 1985 Chevy Pick up 6.2 liter Diesel automatic today. Both, FREE! Can't wait to clean out the Tempo. It's had 12 years of acumulated gunk everywhere. So, here are some pics. These are taken at night so I had to photoshop the brightness some.
VT247

The passenger side of the Diesel Tempo. It is not perfect, but only has 114k miles on it:

The Drivers side:

The engine. Need to vacuum it out and get my air gun in there. Going to take the injectors out and soak the cylinders with some diesel or WD-40 and turn the engine over by hand:

The truck. It's rusty and ugly. Get it running, make a video and pull it out. Scrap the rest of it at Omnisource:

The best part of this truck, the motor. A 6.2 Diesel engine and a 400 Transmission. He had the old batteries partially charged when I got there and it turned over. Said it leaked gas by the tank. I'll rig something up just to make it run, same as the Tempo.

Scrap the truck and keep the engine. Get another Tempo body (keep the vin tag and title) and swap the engine into a solid body. Would LOVE to find an early EXP. Realistically though, find a donor Escort / Lynx or Tempo / Topaz and use the diesel motor.

I had the Escort version of that diesel...got 49 mpg with it....without trying too hard. That leak he's talking about is an o-ring and/or a bushing issue...not a big deal.

A warning about the battery...keep a good one in it...if it gets down and you try to start it...you will fry the starter...not real cheap to replace. Also they have a vacuum pump for the brake booster. I used Bosch filters on mine...bypass and regular.

Use a little acetone in the diesel to stop the black smoke?

You got a good deal there....

I Leased a 1985 Ford Escort Diesel brand new! What a great car!! 40mpg in town, 50+ on highway! I wish i still had it! They seemed pretty rare, not sure how many were made but i never see them! It was pretty slow from a start but the mileage and highway cruising were awesome!! Enjoy!!
Only problem i ever had in the 3 years i owned it was the battery died once(seems like the manufactures only use 24mth batteries). Put in a walmart battery(it was located in the trunk) and was back to running like a champ.
