fueleconomy.gov rates -'97 Metro better than '98+

Hello all,

Trying to find out out why they rate the '95-'97 Metro at 37/44 city/hwy, but for '98 economy drops to 36/44, then to 34/42 for '99? I just bought a '99(1.0 liter manual), so yeah, if there's something I should do to make it perform like a '95-'97, let me know! Thanks!

Hmm,

So.... what makes them heavier? Airbags, ... ??? What changed between '98 and '99 to create such a big drop in mpg?

I've noticed the same thing. Can't answer the question either.

Weight doesn't account for the change. Not airbags, anyway - they all had 2 from 1995 up.

Hmm,

From 1998,
"The Metro now carried the Chevrolet nameplate, along with new front and rear fascias and a SOHC 16v design I-4 1.3L engine with a horsepower increase of 12%.
Electronic ignition replaced the distributor, and MPFI (Multiport Fuel Injection) replaced the TBI (Throttle Body Injection). The new motor offered more HP, torque, and higher fuel economy. This I-4 engine replaced the older 8v 4 cylinder, but the 3 cylinder engine remained unchanged." from Wikipedia "Geo Metro."
multi port fuel injection replaces TBI

Perhaps some retuning for more hp/performance?

Except for this bit:

It's the 3-cyl engine for which the different EPA figures are being questioned, and it went unchanged for years. I have only seen one set of hp/torque figures published for the garden variety 3 (not counting the earlier XFi model).

The only thing left then is engine tune and believe me that makes a MASSIVE difference.

You would have to drop an image of a 97 and a 98 Metro ECU and have someone who knows the map compare the 2, if they IN REALITY get worse mileage not just on paper there has to be something done for pollution or tune, even exhaust can have an effect.

Anyway I don't believe in Unicorns or Magic, it just is doesn't fly there is a reason if it works out in reality.
