Wait, 2300? That sounds too high...You can get used C56 transmissions with like 60k on them for 700 bucks tops, and use the Competition Clutch stage 1 from Monkeywrenchracing (130 bucks). Instead of resurfacing the flywheel you can just buy one of theirs for 100, plus 15 bucks for new bolts.

He got hit on the labor , I find you can't get out of a shop for less then $500 no matter how easy the repair. So I don't use them

I was quoted 1000 for engine removal and replace, which should be more expensive than a transmission remove and replace, and I live in the Bay Area. Getting a used transmission for 700 bucks, a resurfaced flywheel and new clutch for 250, and install for 1000 should be doable.

In my area parts are not as common, I called three shops and got quotes all in the same range. It seems that its a harder job to do the trans then the engine or that is what's friend said.

update, i got the car back yesterday !

final verdict is that the output back bearing broke, allowing the shaft to fall and wedge in the gears. the Why is less clear.....
three possibility's that we can think of:
1 bearing wore out (this is the typical bearing to go on these transmissions from what I hear).
2 Pulse and glide put pressure on the shaft and bearing in the opposite of normal causing it to break after ~34,000 miles of aggressive P&G and ~60,000 of kill switch use at stops....
3 some defect in the bearing

The three people at the shop cannot agree on the cause.... I could see the P&G having loaded the bearing differently but It took 34K miles to show the issue... whats my risk now? I tend to think this bearing is the weak link in the drive train and the P&G did nothing more then help hasten its death at worst. Any other thoughts?

Pretty much impossible to say for certain, isn't it?

The fact that it's easy to do a search and find other owners with this problem says it's not something unique to your driving.

I tend to agree on that, which is why i have not stopped EOC and will resume P&G shortly.

I still think the tail might need a tactical retreat.... to the shed for a while..... but its hard to part with it since its been on from 81,000 miles and the car has 141,000. Its almost made it 50% of the miles on the car..... but It is wearing out and will require a rebuild before winter anyway. So i might take it off in the next few weeks and see if it helps the old image thing ?

but I think i need to try for a record tank first I need to beat 76 MPG.... it wont be easy but the next 2 months are my best chance to do it!

might need to start getting up earlier so i can take the longer route to work......

That is very low mileage for a transmission to fail, particularity a toyota. My vw is at about 260,000 but no p+g except for a trial. The clutch is original too.

. . . I am also thinking of getting rid of this and getting a different car which opens a can of worms, Prius? leaf? old metro and mod it up?

Ideas from the wiser then me people of the cloud?
Don't "get a wife" just because other people want or expect you to. That should be your decision and you should do it because you want to.

Also, a wife may very well be the most expensive acquisition you ever make.

That being said, if you want to get a wife, don't get a Prius or Metro. Buy the best car you can afford that looks like a penis from the side (long, low hood). Not a Miata (perceived as a girl's car) or a red Corvette (looks like you're trying too hard). If you want to Ecomod the new car, don't do any mods that are easily visible (bodywork enhancements, gutting the interior).

Buy this book and read it cover to cover. Memorize it, then do it. It will change your life. Good luck in your quest.

If you are looking for a wife start or continue running or bicycling. Never accept that "opposites attract" total bs. Biggest issue is "no fatties".
