Yeah, don't it make you wish for the good old days, when every village had only one idiot?

Don't despair Frank, eventually, assuming they live that long, the testosterone levels will drop and they will see the huge ERROR IN THEIR WAYS. I am probably among the worst, in the early 70s, when I had my 67 383 Formula S cuda coupe, I went through 100 gallons a week @ $32.9 cents a gallon (1000 miles a week). A hundred gallons money back then would fill my Fiesta for the same money (i understand inflation but that is 10 times). The fiesta gets 440% better mileage. I was making 13.5K a year so $1500 in gas a year was no big deal. Now I spend less than that dollar amount a month for fuel not counting inflation.
The Cuda was 3.5 cents a mile and the Fiesta is 7, bike 5, truck 10 (1972 versus 2013 dollars). A hundred today is close to what a $20 was back then.
Gas is around 10 times the price back then. I kept the Cuda for 16 weeks and later bought a 59 Corvette with a 71 Z28 motor and a wide ratio M22 with a 3.08 diff. I ripped the 4.11 apart. I even wore the steering box out on that car and drove it to work when it would only turn right, replaced the box. The differential cost $25 complete. The Vette got 21 MPG.
regards
Mech

No, around here the old farts are just as bad as the young idiots. Just yesterday a guy who must be in his 60's or close to it was telling me how much he wanted to get a new Silverado 1Ton diesel. I asked him what he's pulling and he said nothing, just for driving around. He wants the 1Ton because then he can put cheap farm plates on it. I said isn't buying a $60,000 truck a rather expensive way to save a few hundred on plates? He really didn't have much to say about that.
I'm trying to be friends with this guy so I had to employ Herculean effort to contain myself: one short little guy, no wife, no kids, no anybody or any thing to cart around, eyeing up this $60k 8' tall quad cab diesel pickup for not much more than casino runs. Compensating???

Maybe he's just 'hedging his bets" that someday he'll need that 1Ton to haul all his "loot" back from the Casino when he "...hits the jackpot..." (wink, wink)?

I paid $4.52/gallon (US) last week, for 91 octane *ethanol free* gas, which they just started selling near me, woot! The STi would really rather have 93 octane even if it does have ethanol in it, so I probably won't get any more $4.50 gas. But the 87 octane is quite a bit cheaper, and it might pay to put it in the Fit if the MPGs improve enough. I'm just waiting for the Fit to need gas, and then I'll give it a go.
I have to admit, part of me wants to pay the extra money just to encourage stations to start carrying ethanol-free gas again...

I’m asking you, have you ever been in a similar situation.

Every day hundreds of times. Usually passing me at 10 over the speed limit.
