GOFAR Fuel Efficiency Dongle (a Kickstarter project):

Hi all,

So you may remember me from my Coast and Burn Calculator for EV's and my interest in fuel efficiency, specifically to do with electric vehicles.
Well I don't yet have the funds to afford an electric car for my every day driving but I still want to improve my fuel economy with my gas (petrol) car I drive everyday. I'm already getting 36 mpg but am trying to get even more to reduce emissions and also reduce the amount I have to spend on gas.

I was given the GOFAR Fuel Dongle, it was a Kickstarter project, for my birthday in May and have just gotten around to testing it. It comes with an Iphone app which I haven't had time yet to test.

Has anyone else had experience with the GOFAR dongle?

I just wasted 6 plus minutes of my life watching a video of a man explaining how cute the packaging is, how nicely it's pack and how nice the product is......

That could have been done in 45 seconds.

And I still know NOTHING about the product or how it works

You'll do better with an ultra gauge, and get MUCH more data from your OBD2 port. This will do some marginal good for people who want it easy, don't care if it is not precise, and are unconcerned if just driving slower will have nearly the same benefit. It's just the optimaization display found in a lot of cars, designed as a retrofit for cars that were not built with it.

See my car's mod & maintenance thread and my electric bicycle's thread for ongoing projects. I will rebuild Black and Green over decades as parts die, until it becomes a different car of roughly the same shape and color. My minimum fuel economy goal is 55 mpg while averaging posted speed limits. I generally top 60 mpg. See also my Honda manual transmission specs thread.

I watched the Kickstarter - OP's vid of the unboxing told me nothing, I will never understand the fascination with unboxing videos.

GoFar's philosophy is that their device learns where your vehicle's consumption per mile is at its absolute lowest, and its simple go/no-go indicator light changes color to show when you're in the butter zone.

That's $89. My OBDII dongle cost $23 and I paid another $5 for Torque Pro. The dongle combined with Torque Pro puts me in touch with a LOT more information and all of GoFar's functions can be matched with a simple Torque plugin.

Nice idea and probably appropriate for a lot of drivers who aren't as engaged with their vehicles as they could be, but it delivers less performance for more money than other options.
