Other Brother Darrell: certainly you have a valid viewpoint, I'm not saying you don't. You don't want to stuff junk in your system. By the same token, with a bit of common sense, you can properly utilize the discarded. Gotta use yer head and also have a bit of luck, just like everything in life.

Agreed, brother. There's little risk pulling sealed bags of Doritos or doughnuts from the dumpster, for instance. Foods with high sugar or salt content = low available water content, and won't support the growth of pathenogenic bacteria. High acid foods are similarly low-risk. I'd skip the brats, though .

Heh heh, mowing through the second package already...
Just thought I'd add, I rarely venture out for the purpose of "diving" anyway- most everything I have comes from the store like anyone else (I'm lucky to have access to great garden produce too). It's more an opportunistic thing with me- if I happen to be near a potentially fruitful bin I'll take a peek. So, salvaged goods are not anywhere near being a daily staple.

I don't think I find quite enough salvage to make a daily living, except back when that's all I had. (Gas stations throw away cooked hot dogs all night long...)
Most of my "diving" or "salvage" activities are for non-consumables, such as bed frames, couches, tables, night stands, etc. I often pull things that can be recycled, such as deposit cans and bottles. Clothes, shop rags, etc. I usually wash clothes and then take them to shelters or Salvation Army stores, GoodWill, Churches, though I don't go to Church myself.
There are some people (whom I know personally) whose "garbage" I end up with about 80% of. Remember, most people around here burn their garbage, but this family would rather have me do something with it. They bundle paper into 4" diameter "logs" for me, and I soak them in oil and use them for heating the garage in the winter. We have a used motor oil furnace, but we don't use it, since we burn wood/paper in the wood heater in the garage.
I've often thought about selling those "logs" that I make, even though I'd probably have to face up to some strange EPA regulation about using discarded motor oil as a combustive additive... O'well, works for me.

but do can your stuff @ 250 for at least 3 min (pressure cookers are awesome)

Hardly. My goal is to remind people to think rationally. If the warnings about the risks of eating contaminated food rationalize their thinking and they don't want to change their thinking to incorporate new risks, what's wrong with that? You expect everyone to try driving the wrong way on the highway because someone told you it's a fun thing to do?
A 3 minute, 250º retort cycle is alarmingly and likely dangerously short. The commercial requirement for retorting canned salmon in 15.5 oz. cans is 100 minutes at 245º.

What's rational about injecting penicillin into our asses? It's a food contaminant, too. The problem with ridiculing things that don't make sense to shallow thinkers, is that they may make sense when you scratch the surface.
Experimental medical marijuana is a sham, and we should all know it. Its advocates ignore the fact that there's been pharmaceutical grade (i.e. standardized) THC available for clinical trials for decades. None of the "medical marijuana" clinics are producing scientifically repeatable research, to my knowledge. They're simply storefronts.

Dude, please take the agenda somewhere else. This thread has been thoroughly hijacked with propaganda.

ROFL! Maybe this belongs in the Off-topic area, like in the Lounge? And I'm the one who widened the thread to include medical marijuana, canning, and Botox?
