I've noticed that there's a HUGE difference between 12 and 14 volts.
Hey, your from OK? I used to live there! I'm an audiophile myself, although not as into it lately. It's been mostly hypermile hypermile hypermile!

It is rated at 14.4v
Yup, I do live in OK. Just got some of that good ol OKC weather come through today! Now the xA has some pretty serious hail damage. Time to try to scam for a new paint job!!

Ouch, yeah, with a bit of help here you should easily be getting mid to high 30s. If your willing to push it high 40s and 50s are achievable. First off check out this page and pick out a few things and start doing them. Once you get them down pick out a few more and start doing them. Work your way along and watch your mileage go up.

Oh ya, I have no doubt that the mileage will go up. I was driving like a mad man, but that also comes from hangin with a bunch of guys that like to drive fast!
I also have a check engine light on for my charcoal pot, wonder if that could effect MPG?? I also think she needs a tune up, just to set everything straight again.

charcoal pot? A tune-up would definitely help. I'd try and get the hail fixed. I have hail damage, but I bought it with that and I have only liability on it to make insurance costs go down. expensive for a teenager

Hello,
I also drive a Scion xA -- a 2005 RS 2.0, with the alloy 15" wheels from Toyota, and I've added the "cold air intake" with it's K&N filter.
I've averaged 37mpg for the entire 3 years that I've owned it, and my best tankful (so far) was 43.3mpg.
I'm now computing now quite a bit (~96-110 round trip each day I go in), though I try to work from home about 2 days a week -- that saves a LOT of gas.
My commute is not easy: the first 12.4 miles takes up to 50 minutes; all on a two-lane "highway" (Route 117 in eastern central Mass), and the remaining ~35.6 miles is on 4-6 lane highways (Route 128 and Route 3), where the traffic can be thick and fast, or just thicker.
I do all the same things that have been mentioned: in stop and go I create a space ahead of me and go slow (idle in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd gear), and I put it in neutral and coast down any grade I can, I stay under 60mph, and I don't use the A/C (*beware* of the defrost setting!!!).
The xA is hampered mostly by low gearing -- in 5th gear at 65mph it spins ~3,400RPM! I know people who own a 5-speed Yaris sedan, and they say it spins at ~2,500RPM at similar speed.
The second big issue the xA has is aerodynamic drag. The official cg is 0.31, IIANM. The rear bumper hangs down quite a bit and there are a lot of rough edges under there, too. The RS 2.0 grille is an open hex pattern -- I'm sure it could be improved?

xAguy -
Welcome to EM! That xA is stunning. I agree with Daox that there are design similarities to the 1st Gen Matrix. Maybe the Matrix should have an honorary xM emblem on it, .

Hi Neil - welcome to the site.
Wow - that gearing is horrendous! Glad to hear you're making the best of it though.
As for your grille, since the original design is for worst case cooling, there's always room for improvement. I take it you've had a look around the aero forum?

Thanks for the welcome!
I will take a look at the aero forum -- I'm thinking of a piece of heavy vinyl? And under the hatch area, behind the beam axle, I'm thinking a sheet of aluminum formed to keep the rear bumper fascia (and other bits under there) from becoming a sail...
The car really needs a 6-speed transmission -- at least 80% of the time I shift straight from 3rd to 5th. The only time I need 4th is in the winter in deep snow going ~30mph, so I can keep good traction and the right speed for the conditions.

Hey xAguy ... Are you going to Asylum in June?
If you had to ask, Asylum is an all Scion show being held in Tulsa on 6/7/08, hosted by Scikotics, the largest national Scion club. Anyhow, it is going to be a blast. If you could I would take time off to attend.
For infor visit our site .. www.scikotics.com
Hope to see you there ..
Laterz ..

Hi,
Quick question: which EPA rating should we use; the rating in the year it was made, or the current post-2007 rating?
Also, how are you folks displaying your vehicles in your signatures?
