here is another question for ya , whats heavier, the tire or the wheel , it may make sence to get larger wheels and lower profile tires if the tire is heavier than the rim.. alsoi wonder if the larger the rim the less weight per rim inch?

Not to mention you could also gear up your end ration with a bit taler rim tire combo.

Around rim weights of under 14 lbs the tires begin to outweigh the rims themselves.
Such was the case when I had traklites, I had 10 lb rims, with 18 lb tires.

I can't find my source any more, but I do clearly remember that the wheel weight of the insight was less then the HX and not much more then the VX and it's a 14" wheel, but the information came from someone who did take the wheel off their car, removed the tire and weighted the rim on a scale that was accurate for trade.

Insight Spare

I wonder if you could use a Insight spare as a everyday wheel. It would way less because it is not as wide as the standard rim. Only 4in. wide. What do you think?

spare wheels maybe, spare tires negative. those are temperary tires that are not for the highway with any load. Some people brag that they used a donut a whole work week and that's awesome for them. Murphy's law attacks me too much for that type of risk.

I was thinking of just using the rim not the tire.Don't know its possible to buy an everyday 4in. wide tire. Just an idea.

Cant rolling resistance increase when you decrease the width of the tire because the same weight is spread over a smaller area?

I just refer back to a bicycle. A mountain bike with a large tire seems to peddle a little harder than a road bike with its thin tire and contact patch. Plus I would think the tire and rim would weigh less increasing mileage.

21.5 lbs, Insight wheel + OEM tire

Ryland - did you ever end up getting those Insight wheels?

FYI, I have weighed a wheel + tire from my new UFO (2000 Insight)

- 21.5 lbs = wheel + tire
- The tires are supposedly 13 lbs new (says Tire Rack: Bridgestone Potenza RE92)
- So, if we say the tire I weighed is ~12.5 lbs (worn nearly smooth)

That makes the Insight rim alone ~ 9 lbs
