How to identify?

So I have this new engine, but I have no idea how or where to find numbers or information on it... I just know it's a Mercedes engine, came from a Reefer unit (drove a compressor), and (possibly) has approximately 40 HP and a top speed of about 3600 RPM. It's non-turbo.

Basically, I'd love to know more about it, including a spec sheet, etc... it may be from 1980's or late 70's, if that helps narrow it down a bit.

Here's what I know so far for sure.
  • It's heavy.
  • It's a single cam
  • Diesel
  • 6 bolt flywheel
  • Siamesed ports 1-2 and 3-4 intake and exhaust
  • 4 cylinder
  • Common rail injection (unless I misunderstand that term)
  • It's heavy
  • No... it's really heavy
  • seriously.
  • Water cooled
  • That's about it.

High Res Pics to come this weekend, most likely... If anyone would like a specific shot, let me know, I'll try to get as many clean angles as I can!

Thanks!

Googled "mercedes engine diesel 40 HP refrigerator" and found this, but it probably won't help :

I found out by looking and with help from another site that works on diesel only, that it's most likely an OM636 model.

If anyone has any information or service manuals, etc... I'd appreciate a look at them.

If it is from Germany, surely it will have a few numbers stamped on it if you keep looking.

I found a partial manual for it in PDF, but it's kind of like an owner's manual, doesn't get into the nitty-gritty that I want.

I'm hoping to find a "dealer service" manual and a supplement for part interchange as well.

The engine was also used in the 1949+ 170D series cars, from what I see, and in several other variations.

According to what little bit I've found about it so far, not looking too awful diligently, all models had between 37 and 42HP SAE @ 3200 RPM, and between 69 and 78 TQ @ 2000 RPM.

I don't know if the same applies for gas and diesel, that BSFC islands tend to clump with pk tq figures, but if they do, that means I will want to keep my average speed at just off idle (30 MPH) and my high speed average (50 MPH) to around 2k RPM, right?

I'm thinking I want to try to get 30 MPH at around 800-900 RPM, then get 50 MPH at about 2000-2200 RPM, so I have the power to overcome aero losses, maintain speed, and still have a little more throttle to negotiate small peaks and valleys when necessary. Does that sound somewhat correct?

Thanks for all the help guys... pics will be coming this weekend, and I'll be sure to clean it up as best I can and search for a serial number or something, then I'll get ahold of MBUSA and see what they can tell me about it. Maybe they have most of what I need!

Never got a response from MBUSA, and Thermo-King has been unpleasant, at best.

Both are termed "less than helpful" in this situation.

Have you tried these guys? I've been meaning to head down there and pick up a CD I'll need eventually when I'm in the area visiting family but I keep forgetting.

To be honest, I'm actually trying to sell/trade the engine to get something a little more powerful, and something that has timing advance built in, so I can use it reliably for automotive service.

I've found several 6.5 and 7.3L diesels from GM's and Ford's that I could put in a very low-dollar chassis from CL, still make out like a bandit, having only spent $213.97 on the engine, and be up and running in less than a week, rather than trying to modify this or adapter-plate that.
