Grapefruit is more popular in Argentina and Uruguay (where it's known as pomelo) than in Brazil. Once in Uruguay I tried a grapefruit-flavored soft drink, and didn't like it. Not sure if adding alcohol would actually improve its taste

Alcohol is supposed to have flavor?! I thought that people drank it because it made them feel funny!
I don't remember if that guy made alcohol on the channel, but when the pandemic started he distilled Corona to make hand sanitizer.
He should definitely make videos about protecting his shop from himself.

You can make beer from corn and it isn't bad but it's slightly off. Mostly the flavors in beer come from the hops selection and yeast byproducts. (think: yeast poo)
Making and distilling alcohol is time and resource consuming. Just stop at the beer/wine stage with high proof yeast and lots of sucrose.

IIRC in my country all the hops are imported. Makes me wonder what could be a suitable (and regionally-sourced) replacement.

Maybe the difference between an alcoholic beverage often made by the homeless and by the inmates is the fact it's often more common for it to get distilled when made in prison than on the streets.

some traditional American pioneer beers don't use hops which is a really invasive weed.
Jas. Townsend has a series of videos that make beers without hops but use other antiseptic plants.
Not hard to modify a coffee pot into a still but I wonder how that passes periodic contraband inspection.

Some traditional African beers made usually out of sorghum also were made without hops.

I didn't take into account any antiseptic effect of any plant on brewing.

I don't know about coffee pots, but it's quite common to see pressure cookers being turned into an improvised still.

Not having any experience in incarceration, I am wildly guessing that inmates dont have access to pressure cookers. I'm also guessing they have access to coffee pots. I do know that the system is low pressure so just about anything lid like can be made to work. However, it does make an unique odor.

I didn't know mead was made from honey... my dad is storing bees and getting honey as the rent. If it's anything like brewing beer, I may have to give it a whirl.

That means you've never see The 13th Warrior. It's a retelling of Beowulf. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_13th_Warrior#Plot
