That's nice, but not always an option...

My job is 30 miles away from my wife's. One of us is going to have to drive a ways no matter where we live.

They were 45 miles away when we first got married... that was no fun. (1hr 40min in traffic each way)

I should calc out how many gallons I've NOT burned bicycle commuting since 1990...

Lessee... 8 miles/day, let's say 3 days/week to generously account for some driving = 24 m/wk x 52 wks/yr = 1248 m/yr x 20 = about 25000 miles.

An SUV at 15 mpg (city) would use 1666 gallons.

Using current costs... AAA says SUVs cost 60 cents/mile... 25000 x .60 = $15,000.

Hey- I can run out and buy a new car!

38 miles rt 50 mpg there 40 back in winter 45mpg and 38 miles is .85 gallons at 3.80 a gallon now 3.20

38 miles rt 60 mpg there 50 back in summer 55mpg and 38 miles is .7 gallons at 3.80 (it will be more this summer) 2.63

Costs me 6 bucks to drive into the big village about 50 miles away two times a week. Once for class and once on the weekend thing.

55 miles each way right now, but it will be 18 miles come this weekend. At the ~40MPG I've been getting lately, that's 2.75 gallons, $9.63/day. But it will be about $3.15/day, which is much better.

Prior to this job, I was walking to work (1 mile), so $0/day. But I'd gladly take the commute with a job in my field then walk to a retail job.

8 miles round trip at 40mpg winter or 50mpg summer so between $.60 and $.75 per day because I tend to fill up on non ethanol gasoline.

91 octane gasoline, mileage drops enough to make it worth the extra cost, I've checked my car, my parents car, the vehicles at work, for all of them it's worth the extra cost due to the saved fuel.
But like Frank, I hope to start ridding my bicycle to work once it gets warmer, otherwise there is a plug for charging my electric car, but it's in winter storage right now.
