How much more MPG can I get if I reduce cars weight by 44 pounds?

Thinking about getting new wheels, stock wheels 26lbs new wheels 15 lbs, thats 11 lbs per wheel or 44 lbs total, is there any calculation for reduction of weight vs fuel savings?

Typically articles on the subject say that you will increase efficiency by up to 2% for every 100 pounds. I think that's a number that they pull out of their butts, but it's a good guess for the average vehicle.

I think your FE would benefit because it would take less power to get lighter wheels rolling. This mod should improve city mileage especially. I have been dreaming about doing this mod too.

Yes, though I don't recall the exact factor. Reducing rotating mass helps significantly more. Plus, you get a smoother ride as a nice bonus with lighter wheels (due to the reduction in unsprung weight).

I've been looking for some weight reduction as well and found a good 30-40lbs of unused weight that could be tossed easily. So... I went on a diet :-D.

The easiest mods you can do to your car without spending any money are adjusting your driving and reducing the weight of the vehicle by removing things you don't need (anyone thinking mini-van backseat removal?). The wheels would help in two ways, first off it would help during acceleration because there is less mass to get spinning, secondly, wheels are considered rotating mass which I believe can roughly be figured as 2x the weight of the object rotating. So, wheels are probably one of your next best mods you can do. The only thing to watch for though is how big they are in diameter and how wide they are. If they are wider then stock, you will have more wheel contacting the ground and have more rolling resistance which could negate any gains you made from the upgrade. Same goes for size, the bigger the wheel, the more the factor of rotating mass will come into play.
