I wonder if I could just stick in one of the extra Suzukiclone radiators I have laying around. They're only about 2/3 the size, but were rated for use with the 100 hp Swift GT vs. this 116 hp engine...

I think the hardtop alone is probably worth $900!

lien burn
The ridiculousness continues!
In Ontario, used vehicle private sales require the purchase of a $20 government-issued "used vehicle information package" -- sort of like a CARFAX print-out. (This actually started before CARFAX-type services were available.)
It shows things like number of previous owners, salvage/non-salvage status, average retail/wholesale value, and as the subject of this post implies, current liens if any.
So I went and got the package for the Miata.
And guess what!
Yes, the car has a lien registered against it! Utterly laughable, considering its condition.
I contacted the owner, and he says the loan was paid off long ago. He also says this has happened in the past with another vehicle of his -- the lender forgot to discharge the lien when the vehicle was paid off.
He says he'll contact them to update its status.
Oh, and he also said: "price is negotiable".
But it goes without saying there's no point making an offer until the lien is cleared. I don't want to share ownership of a crappy Miata with a bank - I want a crappy Miata all to myself!

Bought it! Seven fiddy
I got it.
I got an email letter from his bank, clearing the lien against the car.
And I finally spoke to the owner - we agreed on $750.
It's strange: $750 feels like too much to pay for an old car in this condition, yet research says $750 is somehow a good deal for a Miata in this condition. A look at current prices backs this up, and my Miata-owning buddy insists: " 750 is thievery on your part!"
He also says: fix the floor & radiator, and I could easily flip it for $2500. He personally would have paid the $1k asking price without hesitation, without hearing it run.
So! 50 mpg, here I come?

That does seem a bit much. But, then again I bought a 2004 Civic for $1k that needs some work, but knowing I can sell it for at least $3k. I don't personally think its worth $3k, but thats what the market pays for it...

Also consider that Civic will have collector car status by the time you get it finished.
