Prime time!
I've got my friends' Prime again for a few days.
Good news...
Since my last report, they've bought a house, so they're plugging in the car regularly now, with a positive trend showing in their energy consumption.
Current odometer / "lifetime" MPG reading (gasoline consumption only):
- 32308 km @ 4.5 L/100 km
- 20k miles @ 52 MPG US
The last 3 or 4 fill-ups show a better picture:
- 2430 km @ 2.5 L/100 km
- 1500 miles @ 94 MPG US
Compare to their initial usage, when they lived in an apartment and the car was rarely plugged in. Back in May, it was showing a lifetime reading of:
- 5.1 L/100 km (46 mpg US) with ~22,000 km on it.
Bad news...
The house they bought is out of town! The one-way distance to town is almost exactly the EV range of the battery pack. Doh!

Do your friends not drive very efficiently? Gen4 Prii on Fuelly are averaging about 52MPG, and the Prime is rated for 54MPG gas only vs the 52 of the plain Prius. Their recent numbers beat the 75MPG average of Primes on Fuelly, but that'll vary widely depending on gas:EV ratios.

Canada is colder. I assumed that was the explanation.

Ambient Temps
FYI
Just from personal experience my 08 Toyota Prius Gen2... during seasonal changes Fall/Winter/ Spring/Summer.... the following will be notice able
Fall /Winter MPG suffers even with grill block and other measures
48-53MPG roughly and the dead of winter further drags down to 48MPG
Spring/Summer MPG improves best 59-60 mpg summer roughly
LOVE mother nature

Factor in colder winters, plus driving style. A lot of the distance put on the car by my friends is probably @ 120 km/h / 75 mph on the freeway.
===
It's been getting colder here - we had our first snowfall today.
Ambient temps just below freezing, running the cabin heat on low (probably too low for most people), I could *just* get to town on a full charge, driving very conservatively (under the limit much of the time). 35 km / 22 mi.
So today I figured out how to work the confusingly-labelled remote "Hold for AC" function (on the key fob) to pre- warm the car while it's plugged in. Very nice. Judging by threads on Prius chat, there are a lot of people who are confused by this feature, and understandably so.
And today I remembered I've driven another EV on this same stretch of highway I've been running the past few days:
I was once invited to give a presentation about the ForkenSwift at a little town around 10 years ago. Cruising speed for the ~70 km round trip was 50-60 km/h (pulling onto the shoulder a lot to let people pass). And I stopped half way there AND back for a top-up charge at a friend's place!
Times have changed.

2018 Prius Prime (plug-in). What do you want to know about it?
//////
What I want to know, have they got speeding tickets yet? One Prius raced by me & disappeared over a hill. As I topped the hill myself, I say a stater giving a ticket to the Prius. Prius has SO MUCH POWER NOW, they can get tickets, other than in 20MPH school zones.

I've heard Mitsubishi Mirages can get tickets too.

You can get a ticket on a bicycle if you try hard enough.

One police officer said he liked seeing me race around the area..... tho he said at times he could have given me a ticket. Fifty years ago, I sure would have liked regenerative braking!

Until next time
YKYAEM when...
You find it nearly as interesting getting back behind the wheel of a 20 year-old $#!^box Metro after a few days gliding around in a semi-electric Prius.
Lifetime MPG now showing 4.4 L/100 km = 54 MPG US.
Oh, and I looked up their EV usage on the A trip meter (represents ~3 or 4 fill-ups), and they were at ~55% EV usage. That's with me adding ~160 km / 100 miles of EV distance this week.
