Looks like clear covers are OK in Texas
Texas Department of Public Safety - Inspection/Rejection Criteria

6. All head lamps will be inspected for and rejected if:

n. Lens is other than clear (white).

s. Head lamp is covered by any lens or cover located in front of the head lamp which is any shade or color other than clear.

Of course my headlamps are illegal anyway. I replaced the sealed beams with H4 e-codes.

Did you have any ideas of how you would mount the clear plastic? I know I've looked at it and unlike the grill it doesn't seems to have any lip at all.

The headlamp surrounds come off when you remove two screws down at the bottom front. You'd just have to drill holes and run bolts through.

A recent trip through the local junkyards showed a few have been yanked. I was looking for one for my daughter's XJ. I have the factory one for my ZJ that is plenty stout. But I broke a mounting bolt and took the plate off due it vibrating at low RPMs.

Has anyone tried a header and a cat back exhaust? i'm curious to see if that will add any efficiency to the 4.0 since the exhaust is pretty restrictive. i have a 99 cherokee with a 4.0 and would like some real world feed back on this mod before i do it.

I don't know about exhaust but some people say they get better gas mileage with a snorkel.... Not sure if that's really possible since you're giving the engine cooler air

Yeah love skid plates anyway the Front skid plate would start up an underpan belly quite nicely with some added bonuses. Its metal good protection of your belts and namely the alternator which is prone to failure from water and mudd entering it directly. The skid plate stops the majority of this (have not killed an alt since installing it went through 4 of them prior to that. :-)
yeah but skid plates add a bit of weight, and intense ones can outweigh their benefits.

EDIT: just a disclaimer, ignore this if it's irrelevant.

The stock Jeep skidplates are pretty thin steel, with ribs molded in for rigidity. I think the front one is supposed to weigh 20 lbs or less. The aftermarket ones are usually really heavy 3/16 steel

Here's my first aeromod on the XJ... finally found a front skid plate. Tomorrow I'll be putting on a full width belly skid too, and extending part of it to protect the muffler and cat. Then it will be very easy to add more bellypan.

I wish I could have gotten a good Scangauge comparison between the original air dam and the skid sans dam, but I messed up my calibration settings. It's a long way to a flat highway too.

That sucker looks nice Looks about the same angle/size as mine, maybe just a tiny bit higher. You should notice a difference in coasting time with that thing. The key is to re-training yourself on when to let off the gas and let it coast to the light/stop sign.
