knock sensor question

my chilton book says the sensor provides 8-10 volts to the ecm. when knock is detected that current is cut and timing is delayed up to 20 degrees. if i unplug the sensor that will cut voltage and timing will be delayed 20 degrees correct??? "loss of signal to ecm will cause constantly retarded timing"

The check engine light will come on and stay on. I bet the ECM will just ignore the (non-)input from the knock sensor.

It most likely works like my knock sensor does. It sends an alternating current through the sensor (or maybe produces it at the sensor), and checks for spikes in current. My connector wore loose once and every time it would disconnect it would throw a code and default to warmup mode (stock timing, rich mixture) which sucked gas horribly. I cut a replacement from the junkyard as soon as I could.
