Whats the problem with tossing your lead acid and going LiFePO4?

If you want to keep the computer powered up with out the lithium pack you could install a small lead acid or NiMH battery backed up with a small solar panel maybe charged with alternator power too. You would have to hunt around for a circuit that would engauge the 2nd battery when the lithium power pack is removed, I would just make my own circuit for this. It would be pretty easy.

At some point I am going to build about 25Ah pack that can put out well over 1000 cranking amps for my diesel.
I'm already running my camaro off a little 10.5Ah LiFePO4 pack.

I recomend a gear reduction starter if you are going to use LiFePO4. If I was going to do an alt delete or run alt free and use a deep cycle I would only want a gear reduction starter, they use about half the amps of a straight drive unit to turn the engine over.
When compairing a gear reduction Vs. straight drive starter I am use to a difference of 1/2 to 1/3 the weight, size and power draw.

They make lithium bike batteries that have onboard BMS and are meant to drop in replace SLA batteries in motorcycles. I'm sure you could find one big enough to do some starting for your car as well. I've only heard good things about them but they are about 3 times as much so no personal experience.

Brucey,

That's basically what I'm getting. Just bigger, for a car, and without the car-type terminals. DIY wiring; I'm up to that.

The internal BMS has a 100A limit so on in bad conditions (very cold car) the starter might draw >100A and that's not a good idea.

[EDIT] I had a bad calculation that I posted earlier in this space. What's above is correct, I think. And I probably can start the car something like 8-10 times/day and not run down the lead battery enough to worry about. Will charge it at home later as needed, or run the alt a bit if I want. [/EDIT]

Might want to test it in your drive way and find out.

Hi all
I am new here, I was searching info about LIFEPO4 starter battarys and found this battery pack:
look for: WB-LP12V60AH (cant post link)
en.winston-battery.com/index.php/products/power-battery/item/wb-lp12v60ah

what do you think? its without bms and capable of 10C peak discharge and especially made for direct lead acid replacement in car- no need for bms controller/charger just "plug&play"

is it gonna give any improvement over lead acid ? (beside 40% less weight and longer cycle life?)

Found this.

They seem to have decent prices.

Lithium battery replacement for automobiles and motorcycles

Not sure if this is relevant to the discussion of amp hour rating.

Quote:
^ denotes actual Lithium Ah, not PbSo4 equivalent

(not an approx. lead acid equivalent as other sellers promote to inflate capacity)
