A friend of mine from another club asked me why we can't just keep signing people up and allow more to run. The answer is because of the bottle neck that occurs as a result of topping off the cars/bikes at the filling station afterwards. In the case of this event, the station we are finishing at only has two pump islands. We will try not to tie up the owner's regular customers who did not expect 25 vehicles to be inundating the station all at once. From an outsider's perspective, all they will be able to see is a bunch of weird looking cars with their owners taking their time [we fill each car to the rim - which takes patience] pumping their 64- 128 ounces of fuel. It's quite the scene with all of the competitors standing around the pumps to see how much fuel each car used.
Should be fun.

I'm really looking forward to the numbers for the SAAB. My dad used to drive a 1970 SAAB 96, on one long trip he reported we were averaging about 40mpg. That's pretty good no matter how you slice it.

Update,
This past Monday night I drove out to the Citgo in Northville [where I had planned to finish the event], to talk to the owner, and see the facility in person. I was not satisfied with their limited lot space and found that they only had a single pump island. This would have created a problem.
So I have changed the finish of the event to the much larger Mayfield Mobil, 2460 State Highway 30 Mayfield, NY 12117. Their lot is plenty big for our large group and it has three pump islands to aid post event refills. This change adds 8.4 miles to the run, for a total of [approx.] 102 miles.

That's quite good for the V-4 Saabs.
I think one of the best battles will be between Bruce Turk's 1958 Saab 93B and Bill Clark's 1957 Metropolitan hard top. Bill got 37.86 mpg with his similar '60 Met convert last October and Bruce predicts that he will be in the 35 to 40 mpg range with his 750cc 2-stroker.
Neither of these guys are serious hypermilers, else they'd be shooting for 50 mpg! But I love the classic economy cars.

With the new ending point do you have any news on the route we will be taking? I used google to map a 100 mile route from Fonda to Mayfield but interested to see which way we will be going...thanks!

Hi Matt,
If you're wondering about the elevations of the route, we have a graph for you already. It came to us courtesy of Tom Moeller, who recorded it on his gps in Economy Run II last October.
Disregard the last 16.7 miles as we will not be going all the way back to Fonda this year.
I'd be happy to divulge the route to all registered members. Simply send me a note: mikek [ at] icerace [dot ] com.

Yes it is a delightful route indeed. I am also enjoying this thread which talks about the advantages of better mpgs at higher altitudes. That's makes the mountains even more attractive. And my how those glides are long and fruitful coming back down the side of that mountain.
