I do like that 2nd one.
One fly in the aesthetic ointment I forgot to mention: the front licence plate has to go back on, and it'll be mounted just right of the car's centerline on the lower block

i still dont think it would look that bad
you could make a mounting ring to overlap and secure the plate?! would be a clean flush install if you wanted to spend a couple more hours on the overall porduct
EDIT: does your jurisdiction/city allow the Tinted plate covers?! It may help, not stick out like a pimple

After seeing ROB's renditions, an afterthought would be to have the lower grille block centered with a small inlet on each side, then the plate could go on in the middle?
Unless the Insight is like other Hondas with the small rad offset to one side, then my idea is poo...

Or two grill blocks with the hole centered.
I like the look of the grill blocks, I vote for either color matched or black. And, yes, I realize my vote doesn't count .

For simplicity, i love the look of the offset opening, it gives it a almost factory "theres something amazing about this car that you never knew" type presence... asymetrical is overated

I like it offset for that reason, too.
But the engine radiator is offset on that side, so it's functional too. I could have centered the small opening on the left side, but then I would have had to make a shaped plug to stick on the extreme left to guide the air into the reduced opening.

Could you elaborate on what materials you used for the surface finish? Paint (spray paint?), putty, sanding, epoxy? Just to make the process idiot proof for someone like me. I also need to make a side mirror plug using the same technique.
Bondo?
